I agree. Not sure why Vancouver would do it

Cap space. No one is taking Sutter or Eriksson 1for1. Plus Baertchi has no place on the team anymore, he's an experiment that didn't' work out. Tanev's really one of the only players on the Canucks that has trade value.

Brodziak can make do in Sutter's role for a year, and Manning can be buried. all players are off the books by the time Pettersson and Hughes need to be resigned, plus there's a RHD prospect coming back.

Vancouver doesn’t need to trade Sutter right now, but trading him for Russell doesn’t help. I think Sutter has a better chance of a bigger return than Russell. Bearschti and Tenev have real value. Aside from Bear, all others are buried in the minors. + we add Goldy and retain salary? Easy no

Is it me or are some really undervaluing Sutter?
Yes he's overpaid by a bit but until last season he consistently put up 3C numbers and doesn't he get assigned to play against other teams better players and he kills penalties? It's not glamorous but if he fills a role that isn't easy to fill then so be it.

Idk, this trade looks like a big win for the Oilers and they could certainly use Sutter more then Russell and it's far easier to find a serviceable bottom pairing dman like Russell for way cheaper then it is a center who provides what Sutter does.

Sutter for Russel is 300k cap space. Alone it's not worth it but you save 300-500k a couple of times and all of a sudden you have roster spots and cap space.
With Baertchi's injury history and 3.6m price tag, he's not bringing back more than a 3rd by himself.
Tanev is that same, but he's a RHD, which is like gold so he's worth a bit more.

Not sure I agree with you, but assuming you’re right, shouldn’t Edmonton give at least 2 3rd round picks? Also, Tanev with salary retained should be better than a 3rd. Manning and Brodziak are salary dumps, do maybe Vancouver takes Bear for those. So at the very least, Edmonton should add a 2nd + 3rd
