Pretty fair trade for both teams. Vegas obviously is up near the cap so they have to move out Gusev for a smaller return than what he’s probably worth in a vacuum. New Jersey adds a player that has top-six upside for a fair price.

Right now I say fair given the circumstances. We won't know who really won the deal until after his first contract expires

New Jersey having themselves an off season. Hughes, Subban, gusev for practically nothing. This is why cap space is important and you shouldn't waste it on Tyler Myers, JIM.

I don't know how anyone can say a guy who's never played at the NHL level is already a huge win.
There are reasons no one gave up more than this for him. This is the best offer they got for him.
To be honest I don't really like this trade for NJ.
Going with lines full of 5'10 5'11 guys is going to be fine in the regular season. Come the playoffs though when teams start getting nasty there isn't a ton of push back there.
You can't simply insert a 4th liner in there at that point. This team needed a power forward more than anything else.

Honestly I guess Vegas had to do it, but Gusev is such a risk I don't think it's worth it.

I honestly feel like this is a certain win for Vegas...because a 2nd and 3rd rounder is pretty darn good for a player that you A.) got for nothing and B.) hasn't played a minute in the NHL. We'll see if this can be a win for NJ. Expectations for Gusev are pretty insane right now. Actually sounds like a good time to sell. With that said...NJ has the cap and the picks to roll the dice. Could turn out to be a win for NJ, but we'll see. It's still a $4.5M contract to live up to.

there's a good chance that nothing in this trade pans out; gusev could be a bust and the picks could easily end up being nothing prospects.

devils win this trade right now because they're adding a potential top six winger.

He was first in scoring for a league just below the NHL so...

Devils will make the playoffs in the East. If it's not top 3 in the division for sure a wild card spot. Depth down the middle with Hughes/Hischier top to lines and Zajac pushed down to the 3rd line center spot. Bringing in Simmonds now Gusev to play on the wings along with a Hall out to prove something. Nevermind the improved defense not just with Subban and two very reliable goalies. Great time to be a Devils fan after a rough year.

Tyler Myers is the least of Jim's problems ...

$6,000,000 x 3 years = Eriksson
$6,000,000 x 5 years = Myers
$4,375,000 x 2 years = Sutter
$3,750,000 x 2 years = Pearson
$3,370,000 x 2 years = Baertschi
$3,030,000 x 3 years = Luongo (recapture)
$3,000,000 x 3 years = Roussel
$3,000,000 x 3 years = Beagle
$1,050,000 x 2 years = Spooner (buyout)

That's $33,575,000 in cap-space ... for 7 depth players ... with multi-year terms.

Just about $5,000,000 per player ... and 42% of Jim's salary cap.

Gotta respect Jim though ... he's solving Vancouver's homeless problem.

Yeah, but here is what factors into that. More space on the ice, slower players, not as good players, not easy to adapt to, and one of the biggest ones is they aren't as physical as over here.

Myers is just the newest, highest paid and longest tenured person to be taken off the streets in Canuck land, but yeahhhhh. They done goofed.

Considering that a few years ago, Marcus Johansson went for a 2nd and a 3rd, I like this idea for Las Vegas. Their roster is now set for training camp and they are cap compliant. And maybe Gusev turns out to be the next Panarin, or Kovalchuk . . . who cares?
