Yes he is.

Goals Above Replacement, 2017-19
Gardiner 25
Ristolainen 7.3

Even Strength Goals Above Replacement, 2017-19
Gardiner 20.5
Ristolainen -2.4

Power Play Goals Above Replacement, 2017-19
Ristolainen 4.9
Gardiner 2.9

So Buffalo loses something from the PP, but Dahlin and Miller are likely going to displace Ristolainen going forward anyhow.

The defense is really starting to shape up! I would run different pairings though:

Dahlin - Montour
Gardiner - Jokiharju
McCabe - Miller

These stats are meaningless. Gardiner played on one of the best teams in the league, of course his stats will look better than Risto who was playing on the worst team in the league. Gardiner in his own zone is the same, if not worse than Risto. The offense I don't really care about, we got Dahlin, Montour etc to take care of that. We need to be better in our own zone and Gardiner doesn't help with that

Meaningless? Ok, we're done here.

@skyraider112 Check out my latest sabres post, GM team, lmk what you think is best step forward
The point of the stats he posted do the exact opposite of what you said, your stats should be higher on a team with bad players, so it's more impressive to have those good stats in a good team!

More to your point: if he's worried about comparing players from different teams, why not look at players on the same team? It'll give us a better view of how these guys do relative to their peers.

Buffalo even strength GAR, 2017-19 combined (1000 minutes minimum):

Dahlin 5.4
McCabe 3.5
Bogosian 0.1
Nelson -0.3
Montour -1.4 (2018-19 only)
Ristolainen -2.4
Scandella -10.1

Toronto even strength GAR, 2017-19 combined (1000 minutes minimum):

Gardiner 20.5
Rielly 13.2
Dermot 7.9
Muzzin 6.9 (2018-19 only)
Hainsey 2.4
Zaitsev 0.5

Although these numbers aren't adjusted for quality of competition, we can see from puckiq.com that Gardiner played 895.08 minutes against Elite opposition during this period while Ristolainen faced the same for 1221.20 minutes. With this for context it seems apparent that Gardiner - the best even strength defenseman on his team - is very likely an upgrade.
