some sort of attempt to get under the cap ceiling

Created by: DragonRaptorHybrid
Team: 2019-20 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 30, 2019
Published: Jul. 30, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
a few assumptions:

1) Marcus Pettersson gets signed long-term. Contract projection is cribbed from EvolvingWild's predictions.

2) Ray Shero reeeeeally likes his old players that he's drafted/traded for. Bryan Rust is the name that's been going around for quite a while now re: "how do the Penguins get under the cap?". Shero drafted Rust in the 3rd round back in 2010. Blake Coleman would essentially take Rust's place on the PK. As for Rust's actual place in the lineup, frankly, Dominik Simon should be playing higher up in the lineup. He's pretty dang good at driving possession (bit of a Carl Hagelin-lite, if you will).

3) Dale Tallon actually wants Erik Gudbranson back. I find it really hard to see anybody taking on Jack Johnson's contract, but Gudbranson's contract only has 2 years left, and the first Gudbranson trade was part of the whole "Computer Boys" saga, and I would not be surprised if Tallon continued his attempts to undo everything the Computer Boys did by trading back for Gudbranson. Mark Pysyk's got 1 year left on his contract and can competently play PK/hopefully prop up Johnson.

Unfortunately I think you're probably right about Johnson. I'd probably swap Simon and Kahun. Simon-Bjugstad-Horny played really well together last year so I'd see if Kahun and Malkin can have some chemistry before I'd break up that line. But either way, I'm on board with this.

Why would NJD do the Rust-Coleman swap?

Unless there is another piece to it, it makes no sense for them. Coleman is 20-goal scorer and fantastic PK'er who can play center or either wing. And he is on very good contract.

Other than being one of "Shero's guys" Rust doesn't bring anything more to table for NJD

I just don't know who's dumb enough to take on that contract. Every front office should know how toxic the Johnson contract is. Who's old-school enough to try and trade for the perceived intangibles Johnson brings to the table?

We need to find Peter Chiarelli a job.

EvolvingWild's "predictions" if you want to call them that are pure garbage.
Not only have they been way off on contract amounts but term as well.

It's the equivalent of saying some idiot said some stuff.

MP is going to be in the 1.5-1.8 range, most likely for 2 years.
There will be plenty of cap space in 2 years to go from there.
As for trading Gudy, who did you bring in to replace him. No one, and that ends that conversation.
You don't think for one moment that Gudy was brought in to only play hockey do you?

EW was within 500k of nearly every big contract (now they have MP at 1.6x2 soooo...) And he literally brought in pysyk to replace Guddy lol I'd take that trade easily, pysyk isn't much worse if at all, and makes over a mil less for only 1 year, and we also have a ton of contracts expiring next year that we'll need the cap space for...

It's not like Rust is some bum; he plays PK too and has a longer résumé to draw on that Coleman for evaluation purposes. Coleman's a one-time 20-goal scorer; don't make it sound like he's a consistent 20-goal scorer.
But, yeah, could throw in a draft pick to sweeten the pot. I typically focus more on the players when slapping together armchair-GM teams; adjusting perceived value with draft picks is pretty easy after the fact.

Yohe thinks he's gonna get a long-term contract, and I'd at least initially trust his judgment as a beat reporter whose job it is to cover the team. And, sure, EW's contract projections are simply that, projections. But there's still a basis for their model; they don't pull numbers out of their rear end. And this is a frickin' armchair-GM team where I'm spitballing ideas. EW's contract projections are at least a good place to start.

what LOL

A EW isn't even close on a ton of contracts. Hell I can name like 5 off the top of my head, Aho, Karlsson, Trouba, Duchene, Hayes.
But go on with your bad self.

Oh and by the way Pysyk does not replace Gudy. They will be right back where they started looking for a Gudy like player.

bud. you should maybe take a chill pill every once in a while.
it just seems like you get personally offended over everything that's said on these forums that doesn't fit in to your personal view of hockey. having to be right about every single thing, especially on the CapFriendly forums, isn't worth getting that worked-up over.

mmk, dawg. you wanna raise your blood pressure over every single wrong thing that's said on these forums and die on each and every hill about it, that's your prerogative. that ain't the life for me, tho.

They were 800k off of Trouba, i wouldn't say that's WAY off, they were close on panarin, 700k off Skinner, 500k off of pavs and Lee, almost exact on Zucc and Myers, close on WK etc, I can keep going...

They are at like a 50/50 rate on just the salary, and then you look at the term on them and it's way off.
Like they have marner going for 8 years....nope, not going to happen.

There is no thought rhyme or reason to any of it. There are tons of people on here could have told you Panarin was going for 11 million. It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.
Meanwhile, most people on here could have told you the same thing about Karlsson. Yet somehow in their brilliance they screw it up. Which is why it's not a good source for these things.

I think this was one of the best posts in the last couple weeks for reasonable trades to bring the Pens cap compliant. There is plenty of time for bigger trades if needed during the season. Very nice post.grin

yes and no, they had in the playoffs they had incredible puck possession stats and outshot the Islands but they where outscored massively, could have been puck luck but maybe the line needs a pure scorer.

Yeah that's fair. I don't think they're a must keep together forever type line, but if I was in charge of the lines I'd start the season with them together and see if anyone figured out how to put the puck in the net during the off season. I thought they looked solid enough to give another look.

not a bad shout, hopefully Sully leaves the lines together for more than a few games this season. so many guys who can play in the top six so I think we'll see a lot of shuffling for the first half of the season.
