The Leafs added Clarkson for cap relief so I don't think they'll want to give you assets to take that way. Also, how many LTIR guys do you need?

All of Them!! haha. But yeah, LTIR is useless in the offseason. They will need to clear some space to sign Marner or will have to wait until the season starts.

Gee, I remember when the Leafs had 13.5m in LTIR players during the summer and it never hindered them to sign to the cap with active players. It's kinda insane to think Leafs are so cap strapped.
But let's say that was the case, why would Vegas who has the same cap issues as the Leafs gave Clarkson away to Leafs who now commands 2nd,4th and 7th?

I hate terms like "picking up scraps"

Did you know at one point the "help" use to live in the penthouses.
It wasn't till one day when a rich person went to ask the "help" a question when they saw the amazing view of the city did they change their tune about wanting to live on the top floor. Now everyone pays big money to be there.

The "scraps" are usually the players that turn a team around.

IMO option the 2nd round pick is a wash because of Chlapik. Essentially the Sens need to open up some contract room because they are hitting the max number of contracts allowed. Chlapik IMO is worth a 2nd. May end up being a decent player but has been surpassed in his position on the depth chart.

As it relates to Clarkson from VGK, it is an intriguing trade. I would interpret it as VGK doing the same thing as mentioned above and the Leafs knowing they won't be able to sign Marner until the season starts. Perhaps this trade is signs that they know they can only sign him come season start. Leafs would also have to move Horton to sign Marner in the offseason and perhaps they have tried without success.

Perhaps this on its own kyboshes my trade as a whole.... Maybe add Horton but then the Sens would have to add high money low cap player to which they have few players in that situation. No way Melnik takes on more money.

If the Sens were to add McArthur for example, than Leafs Hotron you only open up $6.5M per season cap while Sens taking on slightly less real money but they erase the draft picks so... stalemate... Likely why this has not happened.

Leafs are so grateful that years ago that Leafs were able to trade 5.25m Clarkson for 5.3 uninsured LTIR Horton. Strictly a cap move as the MLSE ate 27.5m in cash payout to Horton and CBJ were happy to pay Clarkson 5.25 X 5 for a 2m player . Clarkson went on career ending LTIR later. The reason Horton has never been traded is because no team wants his uninsured contract. Doesn't bother MLSE. The owners, Bell and Rogers just raise our telecom rates.
