Does Shattenkirk make sense

Created by: BCAPP

Description
No I don't think so. It requires marner to take a bridge which if he does, I don't think it will happen until closer to training camp and I think Shattenkirk signs before then.

(I bet a bunch of people comment in here something like "no he doesn't make sense!1!!11!" Without reading this)

Depends on price. I think marner is getting a bridge regardless so a 1 year deal between 1-2.5 wouldn’t hurt

@Jamiepo @SammyT_51 @palhal @Jangle29 @LoganOllivier @Laudan

I was a big fan of Shattenkirk in his prime and always wanted him on the Penguins. Obviously he isn’t the same player but he could still bring decent value to the Leafs. He probably isn’t as good as Zaitsev but surely better than Ceci.

Honestly, I think Ceci has more potential than Zaitsev (he’s 2 years younger) plus was a first round pick, GM Murray identified him as someone with great puck moving skills and shooting abilities. He still has a chance to improve but Zaitsev, I honestly felt he had a great playoffs against the Bruins.

Leafs really don't have the cap for Shatternkirk if he looking for any kind of money. Leafs have Barrie and Ceci at RHD, so Shattenkirk would be replacing whoever slots into the other RHD...Excellent chance he is still better than Marnicin, Holl or Schmaltz who are tentatively slated at RHD. Who can tell, maybe Shattenkirk at this point isn't good any more. Really he might be PP specialist but as even strength Dman is he NHL good?

From my point that would make to many "give them second chance" Ds already. Tho i agree if he can be signed for 900k, hes defenitelly better option then Schmaltz ( who i think will be sent down ) and would make 3rd Pair of Dermott - Shattenkirk pretty badass ( or if he will be sheltered by Rielly and Ceci rolled to 3rd Pair )

Mainly the knee injuries took a toll on his career. He looked really good in STL, obviously not at Pietrangelo or Parayko’s level but definitely close. Look how far he’s fallen off. Do you guys believe Schmaltz will be a bust?

I remember watching Shattenkirk and Alzner during the playoffs prior to their UFA summer. I thought they were average to poor then. Suddenly players can change often for the worse.
No, I don't think Schmaltz will be a bust. He is a proven AHLer. To expect more ....even NHL competent seems unlikely. He just might have reached his top levei of greatness, the AHL. No shame in that though.

Yeah Shattenkirk and Alzner were awful during that 2017 against the Penguins. I don’t think Shattenkirk was healthy since I remember Cullen blowing by him for a short handed goal and Alzner was just too slow, the Penguins exposed him. People said the Caps would be worse without them, but look what happened! They added quick defensemen like Djoos and won the cup. Schmaltz was a first round pick, to only make it big in the AHL seems disappointing.

I think the only negative impact of anything beyond a 1M deal is that it would dig into the cap space that the leafs have set aside to protect themselves against an offer sheet to Marner that could come in at under the 4 firsts threshold. They're pretty much counting pennies to make sure they can cover their butts for an unlikely situation like that.

A 1M d 1yr deal can probably be covered over with some paper moves/waives/shortening the roster or otherwise

But could you imagine if somehow we lost Marner to an improbable OS because we're a few 100k short to match given we sign Shattenkirk at 2M or something like that?

That would be a very leafy thing if things rolled out like that. ..

Me too. But right now the leafs have cap space to match an offer of up to 10. 55M, or just under the four first threshold. It wouldn't be worth it to let him go for that compensation .

I don't know how a possible Shattenkirk deal would impact that option . Tbh; I'm too tired to figure it out right now. But I trust that someone will ...

He would be a nice depth piece but the Leafs are currently at 48/50 contracts assuming Neuvirth gets a contract (or a goalie at least after trading Sparks) the last spot is reserved for Mitch, so unless we were to make a trade I highly doubt we sign Shatty, also he doesn't want to come to Canada, but who knows.

First round picks are overrated when considered as just first round picks.

There is a big difference between a top 5 pick and a pick 26-30.

There are essentially a few tiers that vary a bit by year

Tier 1: pick 1 (sometimes 1 and 2 or even 1 and 2 and 3)
Tier 2: the next 5-7 or so picks (usually about 3-8
Tier 3: the rest of the top 10 to about 15 (pick 9-15)
Tier 4: the ret of the teens to early 20s (pick 16-24 or so)
Tier 5: the rest of the first round into the second (25-35 or so)
