Id rather sit him for a year or trade him for top pairing D than this contract.

its the reality. Rather keep him away from free agency as much as possible

Those go hand in hand, but Evolving Wild has him projected at ~$9.6M x 8Y so let's go with length.

The lenght is good, but thats 2mil more then he should get on that term. And the money is good if term is twice as long.

As much as I agree with your opinion this is what’s gonna happen or he’s not gonna play I honestly have no problem with that contract. Obviously I think it should be lower and the stats and comparisons prove that but I’d rather have mitch than not

Marner's contract won't ever be a problem. He's going to be a star. It's the secondary contracts that will be the problem and currently the Leafs have zero bad contracts.

Did you read the article? He's not signing for 8 years and wants at least 9M, good luck getting a long term for less than 11M

Who has the room and would give the leafs fair value? They have no leverage.

There are teams that would give them full value who would offer marner big contract. Leafs have all the leverage in Marner negotiations. He wouldnt sit until UFA status am I right?

Yes, I read the article. And he could want league max for 1 year, that doesn't mean he is going to get it. If Dubas signs Marner to this deal he should be fired. Any GM signing Marner to $11M+ should be fired.

They're going to piss away their window over 1M/year? No team is giving up assets for Marner when the leafs have to sign him (and have to before the season starts).

So what do the leafs do then? Get screwed by signing him in season? You can't just force a player to sign a contract because you want him to.

Offer an array of 1 to 8 year contracts at fair value and tell him to sign one before camp. If he doesn't, he gets traded or sits the year. It's not optimal, but paying a guy $2-4M more than his fair share is ridiculous and will hurt the team.

So the leafs ruin a year of their window over 1.5M? Seems like bad GMing.

Piss away their window? If they move marner they are still in the same window as before. Marner is like 5th most valuable Leaf. They would miss him but they would get a great package back for him (Pesce+Teravainen as example). 1M a year? Huh? He is worth 7M on 3yr deal and not more. Id give him 1M more just to have him for 8x3, which is overpayment but at least they would have him signed.. But I would not give him 2.5mil more than his value is. Not even a question. They would offer him array of reasonable contracts for every term except 4 and 5 yrs. They can tell him to sign one of those and stay a leaf or say if you want more, this and this team is offering this and this money and we will trade you there if you dont sign any of those proposed deals to these terms. All front or back loaded how much he wants. But the AAV would be at the value the Leafs want him to have.

I think you mean $2M-$32M yes. That can cause a lot of damage over the years vs 1 year.

You think Carolina is giving up Pesce and Teravainen for Marner? In what world would they do that, maybe one and the leafs first rounder back but Carolina has no reason to pay fair value. 3x9 still gives the Leafs plenty of room. It's over market compared to other wingers but Marner had a career year and has the leafs over a barrel.

If you think he's worth 3x7.5, you're going to say no to 3x9 (not close to 32M idk where you got that number)?

Uhhh, yeah I'm going to say hell no to 3x9. And the 32M is from me saying $2-4M AAV overpay which for an 8 year term comes out to $16-32M.
