With Subs now in the lineup and Smith itching for a spot, Vats is expendable. So we off load Vats for picks and replace him with Shatty for cheap.

I think it's because as of now the Devils have 8 D-men if Smith makes it out of camp, so even if you trade Vatanen and sign Shattenkirk you'll still have 2 D-men sitting in the press box each night. Plus I would rather see Smith, Mueller, or Carrick get those bottom 6 minutes instead of Shattenkirk; that way the Devils can get a better idea of what they have in them.

You sign Shattenkirk for cheap. Then if you’re out of a playoff spot by the TDL trade Vat and Shatt for picks. Recoup assets.

At best, if Shattenkirk plays great, you could get a 2nd for him but still I would give that playing time to the younger D-men. Also if the Devils aren't in a playoff spot by the deadline I can only assume there will be a fire sale: Hall, Simmons, and Vatanen defiantly maybe even Greene, Butcher, or Gusev depending on how the season plays out.
