Is this fair for marner

Created by: Snipshow4416
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 4, 2019
Published: Aug. 4, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Pat kane came out of his ELC with 230 points. His next contract was 6.3m for 5 years which was 11.06% of the cap. Marner came out with 224 points in 3 less games. Not a huge difference. If he signed a 5 year deal for the same cap% it would be 9.01m. Leafs obviously don’t want 5 years so 3 would work. Marner seems fine with a 3 year deal considering he just offered one to Toronto. it would have to be a little less money but probably not by much to make it fair because of a shorter term so wouldn’t a 3 year deal around 8.5-8.75 be fair. Give me your honest opinions.

The difference is toews hadn’t just signed a bigger deal before Kane signed his.

5×9 would be perfect, considering kane played a huge part in a championship before his ELC even ended

Not perfect for Toronto tho 3/6/7/8 is what they want

I could see 9M/3yrs. It's an big overpay, but apparently AM had a similar three year offer in the 9Ms, IIRC. That should satisfy Marner's need to get the same treatment as Austin.

I can't see the leafs offering a 4 or 5 yr deal, and it appears Marner doesn't want a 7 or 8 yr deal. A 3 or 6 seems most likely to me. That, or he ends up sitting

Depends on the structure. I think 9.5 is a fair contract for Marner. But if you structure it like this it would be fair but because he is asking for $50M per year on a 4 year deal he wouldn't accept
Year 1 - $8M - 7.3 SB
Year 2 - $8M - 7.3 SB
Year 3 - $11M - 10.3 SB
$9M AAV and year 3 would give him an $11M QO on a one year taking him straight to UFA if he accepted

Or not structure it like that so he doesn’t accept

It's fair, I just worry about trying to re-sign both Rielly and Marner in the same off-season. I would assume Kapanen gets traded for pick(s) or an elc player, I would think that Johnsson would be moved as well (depending on what happens to Andersen in 2 years).

I think that number is very fair for the three year term.

So you suggest 8.75m for 3 years. Matthews signed for 11.642 for five. Aho which is very comparable to Marner 8.45m for five. Hence the conflict, Marner thinks he as valuable as Matthew (and he might be) so he thinks 10m X 3 is fair, Leafs probably think 7.75m X 3 is fair. And here we are five weeks away from training camp.

Not saying you number is wrong, but just showing the the justifiable variables in any deal.

It could be a 10.5 at the end if you'd prefer. I just think it's the best way for Marner to get paid and the Leafs to get under the cap

At the time they signed the contract, probably Toews was the best player on the Hawks. But hard to argue when they both won 3 cups and a Conn Smythe.

Any contract Marner is going to get will be no longer than 5 years anyway so might as well do something like this to keep the cap hit low
