Description
Not a Wild fan here but I was just wondering if MIN situation was as bad as it looks from the outside.

After looking I think it's too early for a full rebuild because no matter what they do now they'll still be on the hook for 15M$ of cap hit for 2 players of 38-39 years of age by the time the youngsters will be up for a raise on their ELC. This year should see some moves but nothing crazy like the Rangers did, moving rental pieces and bottom liner for picks kind of stuff. I would personnally try to grab younger prospect at this year's draft (USHL, US Dev program and foreign 17yo players) so they could let them grow a little (NCAA, SHL, SuperElit, etc) before coming to pros and starting their ELCs (Same could be said about 2021 draft).

In the next couples of years MIN should look at utilizing their cap space to take on some short/medium term bad contract and gain future assets. They could then replenish a below average prospect pool. Didn't help to have only 2 picks in the first 3 rounds of the 2016 AND 2017 draft classes combined.
Bad contracts I'd look to aquire over the next 48 months: David Backes, James Reimer, Brendan Smith, the infamous Jack Johnson and Loui Eriksson. These teams may be looking to dump salary soon.

If Maroon doesn't resign with Blues I could see him land a 1-2 year deal with the Wild only because he'd get paid and it wouldn't be too far from home. Maroon, Kunin, Fiala, Ek and Hartman splits duties on the fourth line depending on who they play.

What you guys think?

Conditional 2nd round pick: If team makes the SCF and Staal plays in 50% on playoff games the pick is traded. If conditions not met the pick is withdrawn from the trade.

1st round pick is Top 3 protected, slides to a 2021 unprotected 1st.

    1. Staal, Eric ($1,400,000 retained)
    2. 2020 6th round pick (MIN)
    Additional Details:
I see this trade happening if around TDL Wild's out of playoff picture.
The team receiving him would be looking for center depth for playoffs/next year. Staal can still play a strong game, good faceoffs and should be really helpfull down the stretch as a 2C/strong 3C. Pretty sure Staal wouldn't mind being traded to get a shot at a cup.

**Florida was just grabbed for the example of the trade, I don't know who'll be looking for centers at TDL and in a playoff push.**

No way fiala signs for that, or that he is a scratch or on the 4th line. He is a top 9 guy. Foligno is a 4th line guy, we don't need maroon we already have a crowded lineup. The new GM won't come in and sign anyone. Rask is more than likely our 4th line center.

Not a Caps fan, but IMO, they're pretty much exactly mediocre. They'll finish last in the central, but will probably finish in the 20-25 range in standings points if they ice the roster they have today. I think it's time to move out assets to get draft picks and prospects to inject some youth into this old team. Yes, you'll have the twin behemoth contracts in Parise and Suter, but the Wild will have to have strong asset management in the tail-end of their careers.

First thing is trading out Zucker. He's a really good player. A competent GM could get more for Zucker than what Fenton was reportedly going to get back for him.

I think the next thing is moving out Spurgeon. He's really good as well, but he can get a nice package back from a contending team.

I'd even consider moving out Dubnyk if he'd waive his NTC. Goalies don't typically get a lot in return in trades nowadays, but a team could use his services in net. Especially a team later this season that has an injury to a goaltender, or could just use an upgrade in general. Jersey would be really interesting here, but that depends on how Blackwood performs, and what would happen to Schneider.

I concentrate more on the situation than the price tags on players for this. I assume he signs for more but it'd be irrelevant for that thread because they have a ton of space no matter what.

Staal doesn't want to leave Minnesota, I'm pretty sure he'll want to retire there.

I'm of the opinion the Wild should go all in and take a run at winning a cup, forget a rebuild, too much money tied up for too long in old guys to go through a rebuild.
