Agreed he's not

he played almost 22 months straight with no break between representing FIN , Draft Columbine and post draft rookie camp followed by training the rest of last summer for an NHL debut . come mid Feburary we had to start scratching him because he was basically in jeopardy of injury because he didnt have the same strength for bracing himself for hits especially along the boards , Cedric Paquette took him out hard then threw him to the ice after as he was falling , he looked beat after that his season was over in Claude's Eye's as he would not risk injurying the 18 year old

KK is a good season away from being top 6

Poehling or Domi will be rotating 2nd Center duties
i think you might see Poehling start on Domi's RW in Camp but come 10-15 games into the season
we'll see Poehling take over Center as he's just a dominant faceoff center and we need guys capable of Danault's level of success .

KK didnt have the 3 years Poehling had to prepare Physically and Mentally for North American hockey so it will take him slightly longer to learn to play Center at this speed .
Poehling on the other hand got drafted off his ability as a 2nd Center bulk faceoffs defensive Center compared to a Plekanec's at the draft by Timmons .

the real X factor here though is Suzuki as he's coming into a situation in MTL just like his friend and training partner Marner was in TML his first year pro .
if he gains Chemistry with Either Danault , Poehling ,KK or Domi its likely he'll stay up as he's turning Pro this year so its 1 year off his ELC either way with the only clear upside to an AHL Start is they intend on using him at Center not Wing (something i find very unlikely as he's simply like Marner a better winger despite being a good Center )

depends on who's there with him

if its Byron and Armia for example , i would
place Suzuki on Domi's Wing while investing in Domi's growth as a Center .
it would give us 2 of the best hitting forwards with a combination of size and speed to mentor Poehling .

if Suzuki doesnt start this year in the NHL then Poehling likely moves up higher in the wing position
but it makes way more sense to develop Suzuki as a Winger as of KK ,Suzuki and Poehling its clear to anyone watching that Poehlings the best Center today .
long term KK will surpass him but short term he's the guy.

There was genuine discussion last September about whether KK or Domi would be the 1C. I think KK is redy and I'm not alone in that boat

i,d let hit start in Laval with top minutes for a while instead of letting him play 8-9 min. IMO, you give him top 9 minutes or Laval

They will very much play it by ear, but I don't see Suzuki starting the year on the roster. He may be called up near Christmas if he's lighting up the league. As for the wingers, it's probably a repeat of last year. Plug and play. This is my idea of what opening night, after that only God knows who's going to end up where

I like your point of view. The step between 3rd center and 2nd center is a big one. But one thing I wonder is the partners of KK, our future 1st center. I like Lehkonen and Armia and the Finn-line-thing, but IMO, Lehkonen won't be a 1st line, and Armia won't be any top 6. Then, it could be a good idea to put KK with longterm wingers,

As i said to Billy, this is opening night, none of this is guaranteed to stay the same, the lineup will change period to period with this team.

Opening night i see :

Tatar - Danault - Gally (the chemistry was perfect last year)
Domi - Poehling/KK - Drouin (Depending on which is more ready to handle the 2nd line)
Lehkonen - Poehling/KK - Byron
Weal - Cousins - Armia.

agreed

Ylonen is a year away from being NHL ready he was saying this summer
he thinks he's close but would rather develop to the point he know's he can vs he thinks he can . (smart lad)

i think another big factor for KK will which Veteran he attaches himself to on LW
last year it was Paul Byron who started with KK-Armia until his injury which allowed Lehkonen into play.
come feburary the line was back together because Lehkonen had struggled to provide a continued spark
i'm hoping this year he latches on to Drouin instead as long term that would be the most ideal situation

long term on RW and Center we kinda know what it will be
Poehling-Caufield have established history of success
KK -Ylonen the same thing but to a lesser extent as KK turned Pro so early
Suzuki long term i'm sure will carve out a top 6 wing spot i just dont know which side he'll play

our LW situation is a lot more Dire as we're dependent on Domi and Drouin long term with no stand out LW prospects who will be NHL top 6 ready in the next 3 years .
not that Domi/Drouin being here is bad at all ,its not but at the same time every other position has lots of depth options where as MTL would have to take a reliable Center in Ikonen or Olofsson and force them to wing which i dont like as i would prefer a natural goal scorer like ANA Comtois who we should trade for

there's just so much youth in our system but not enough quality on LW
although Teasdale is a stud he's better on RW as he's a mobile skater and he's our best LW prospect .
the only other LW even close is Pitlick who is crazy fast
Fonstad , Harvey-Pinard , Gorniak and Vedejmo are all long shots who will need 3 AHL seasons minimum to reach consistency and an NHL promotion
but they are likely to develop later as Aggistino ,Barberio and Vatrano have .

i'd have to point out anyone thinking our 4th line Center plays 8-9minuts hasnt watched a single game since Claude Julien took over

our 4th line Centers are EXPECTED to kill Penalties under Claude Julien as such they end up with around 12-13 minutes unless they're an AHL Scab like Chaput was .
Thompson came in right away playing at his lowest 9 minutes and at his highest 17 minutes over 25 games. he played over 15 minutes far more then he played under 12 minutes .

Poehling if he starts would average 11-13 minutes with similar lows and 15-16minute highs .

4th line with Claude Julien means you either step up or get replaced .
Froese couldnt step up so Chaput was brought in , Chaput failed and Thompson was acquired .
all Claude Expects is for you to finish Checks , Win Faceoffs and Kill Penalties .

playing Poehling in the AHL makes sense only for Conditioning as he and Danault will help carry the bulk of the Defensive Zone and Neutral Zone Faceoffs which is FAR MORE VALUABLE then AHL faceoff Experience because you're facing better competition while bonding with future line mate's .

it would be outright irresponsible to put Poehling in the AHL given whom our Coach is and how much he covets the 4th line

Centers are Danault as he was excellent last year will gally and tatar... then KK on the second line center and domi moved to the wing.... i like Poehling as the third line center and thompson as the fourth line center... wouldn't it be great if suzuki made the team and made Drouin expendable and maybe we could get Gotisbehere for him and them play mete with juulson on the third pairing.... dreaming maybe.... but I like that kid and I am not so high on drouin any more

I think it may end up like this:
2019-20
Tatar-Danault-Gallagher
Drouin-KK-Domi
Lehkonen-Poehling-Armia
Cousins-Weal-Byron
Tatar gets traded at TDL and gets replaced by Suzuki.

2020-21
Drouin-KK-Domi
Suzuki-Danault-Gallagher
Lehkonen-Poehling-Armia
Weal-Evans/Vejdemo-Byron
Then Armia and Weal get traded at TDL and get replaced by Caufield and Evans.

2021-22
Drouin-KK-Domi
Suzuki-Danault-Gallagher
Lehkonen-Poehling-Caufield
Teasdale-Evans-Byron
Byron gets traded at TDL and replaced by Ylonen or whoever.

2022-23
Drouin-KK-Domi
Suzuki-Poehling-Caufield
Lehkonen-Danault-Gallagher
Teasdale-Evans-Ylonen
