3-year deal on Marner will be really bad. Toronto isn't willing to negotiate 4 or 5 year term. Marner wants to have the UFA status in 4 or 5 years. By signing a 3-year contract this year, all he has to do is sign his QO or go through the arbitration process to force himself into UFA status in 4 or 5 years from now
