Rust+Johnson has to be the most used package deal in the history of CapFriendly. I think it's in 99% of PIT AGMs.

Basically is this years Hunwick+Sheary dump. Basis of this is that Johnson has to go. Rust kinda is the odd man out ever since the Tanev signing. Just something has to give here soon so we can get Pettersson signed.

Though you have to imagine it will cost more to make that deal work. Hunwick only had 2 years left with a $2.25M AAV. Sheary also had 0.5 points per game stat. Them together brought back a 4th. Johnson has 4 more years a $3.25M. Rust has a 0.45 points per game stats. Imagine PIT will have to throw in a high pick or good prospect.

Rust although having less PPG than Sheary is the better player. So that should help bridge the gap a little. Also I dare say that JJ although bad is slightly more serviceable than hunwick (if you ignore contract cost). So really is paying rust to make JJ feel 2M cheaper.

I don't think there is a single person who actually watches penguins games who would compare Hunwick/Sheary as the same as Rust/Johnson.

Hunwick/Sheary was basically clearing out two mistakes at once. Hell Sheary was playing on the 4th line and totally useless unless Crosby was carrying him on his back. His signing of that deal because he was the coaches son in law was one of those BS moves that make hockey fans scream. Much like the signing of JJ because he's Crosby's friend.
Please don't confuse that as being the same as trading Rust who legit earned his deal and is a good player.

Rust earned a decent deal but was given a **** contract by Rutherford. Didn't deserve 3.5M and didn't do **** after signing it. He's still basically the odd man out on offense with the Tanev signing. Gotta move someone to sign Pettersson and if it isn't Johnson, its Rust. Would be a mistake to move Bjugstad, at least now.

Rusts contract is in line with his production. He racked up 18 goals last season plays the PK, and is getting good ice time and performing well.
I don't know where you learned how to evaluate a hockey player but it's clear why you don't do it for a living.
One quick look at his comparables shows he's worth every $ he got paid.
