Leafs 2021 keeping Muzzin

Created by: Liamthepro

Initial Creation Date: Aug. 6, 2019

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I'm trying to show what works here, representing fair value for all the signings. If you hate Gudas, sign someone else for up to 4.7M, and send Engvall or Agostino to the Marlies. I'm not bothered, the point is to show that the cap situation looks amazing going forward, 19/20 being a tight year, but things are beautiful thereafter.

Giving Gudas 3.7 is a bad contract. Never overpay depth, that is the 1 clear cut rule to follow in the cap era.

Engvall,Aberg & Agostino over Bracco in the lineup you have hurt me.

Other then that Muzzin is going to get a Raise from 5m be looking in the 6-8 Range by 2020.

Dermott you are going to most likely be looking at the 3-4m range for 2020. Remember the big TV deal is coming up for the NHL. Should be a massive cap spike for 2021-2022 players are going to use that to their advantage

It's an overpay but gudas is very good. Amazing without the pick and great defensively. Hes like Hjalmarsson where he cant move the puck up the ice but he would complement someone like rielly perfectly. No matter who hes played with he has gotten positive results, he is dirty but more penalties leads to more powerplays. A top 4 of rielly, muzzin, gudas and dermott would be great and they could have sandin and Lilly play on the 3rd pair. I have to go change my shorts lol

Gudas isn't that good. He's slow and he takes way too many penalties. He's a bottom pair tough guy and that's all. Paying more than 1.5 is stupid and would be a regretful decision.

It is an overpayment but he gets results whatever pair he plays on. Hes like a tough guy cody franson. The more penalties he takes means the leafs would get more powerplays so that would end up helping them. I do think that anything over 2.5 for him is an overpayment but hes a player that babcock would like but hes actually good, besides his inability to move the puck he is good in almost all other areas

I think you lose all your credibility when you say, the more penalties he takes the more powerplays the Leafs get. You do understand that when a player on your team takes a penalty, you go on the penalty kill not the powerplay right?

I think that is check and mate sir.

Go look up penalties for and against on moneypuck. It shows that if you take one penalty you usually get one powerplay and so on. The refs are usually making makeup calls so if the leafs take more penalties the refs make more makeup calls. Check check mate. It's almost a direct correlation

Again a fan who looks at the surface of something without digging deeper. Its always easy to find "Direct Correlations" but if you don't go beyond the surface those are just numbers made to paint a picture you want to see. Gudas sucks, and he won't be signed in TO for anything more than 1.5 million, because he's a 3rd pair guy who doesn't help a team win, he may help a team not lose sometimes but that's it.

I disagree about gudas but that's ok. I think you are undervaluing the things that he does but at best hes a number 4 guy. I see him fitting into the top 4 but hes also a good 3rd pair guy. He does have flaws but the positives outweigh the negatives imo.

We just got rid of Hainsey who was an anchor for Rielly and you want to add a dumber version of Hainsey who is slower but hits more. Just stop.

I dont know if hes slower but you may be right. He has played a little bit with ghost and provarov and their numbers have only gotten better when they played with him. It was a small sample size but he managed to have really good numbers with the guy who broke mcdavids collarbone. I dont remember his name but they got results. I dont know what Hes doing well but no matter who he plays with he almost always has good advanced stats over his whole career

He's a slightly younger Roman Polak. That's it.

Gudbradson then whoever, he's just a slow big bottom pair guy who takes too many penalties and only looks good with better partners.

Except he has been great with everyone he plays with. Brandon manning isnt exactly a guy who drives play. All the partners he has played with are also much better when hes on their pair. He isnt the best pker but I think that's the flyers system. He can get the puck out of the zone and he is far better transitionaly then both guys you mentioned

He is a bottom pair tough guy. All these numbers you are looking at don't matter much when his competition has been 3rd and 4th liners. He can't play against good competition. Don't waste money on imagined needs. Find people that can drive play, he isn't a player that does that and never will be. He'd be a 3.5 million cap anchor that will cost you assets to move because the Leafs can't afford to waste money on overpaying depth players.

I'm not saying 3.5 for him is good but he is a good 3rd pair guy who I believe can play on the 2nd pair. Quality of linemates is much more important then quality of competition and if he was to play with rielly he would do very well. Nate schmidt and colin miller dominated bottom pairing minutes on their former teams and once they moved up the lineup they weren't as successful but were still very good. Ron hainsey wasnt a good 1st pair guy but a very good 3rd pairing guy. The opposite can be said for gudas. Hes a very good 3rd pair guy, he can be a good 2nd pair guy and not a great 1st pair guy. They shouldn't play him on the 1st pair but on the 2nd pair he'd be good

Haha, I had a feeling the whole conversation would be about Radko when I posted this. You guys missed the point! That is that it's possible to retain Muzzin. Probably around 5M, because he is not going to get any faster/better as he is getting less young.

My understanding is that Bracco is a threat offensively, but inept defensively. The Leafs have not enough defensive forwards, and lots of offensive forwards, if Moore and Mihkeyev latch onto permanent spots on the wing. No chance that Bracco grinds on the fourth line or kills penalties right? That is my thinking there. Their defensive frailty also makes keeping Muzzin very attractive, and Gudas is a positive defensive contributor also. Could have put another guy in, but a defensive D man is going to be an area of need, with Liljegren and Sandin up on the big club.

Muzzin also signed for 5.80% of the Cap when his contract was signed in 2020-2021 Assuming he gets no raise what so ever which would be SUPER RARE. he would at LEAST make 4.9m
