I wouldn't give you Tierney and a 2nd for JUST the 1st. Tierney should be worth a 1st on his own.

I think the guy was saying his trade could happen at the 2020 draft if Pits first rounder is in the 10-17 range.

Yes that's exactly what I said. When Tierney is an RFA looking for more money

I know that’s what you said...I say they should make it happen in hopes of it being nowhere close. I get what you’re saying though when you talk about how everyone in the metro will be competitive. I just think if the penguins get rid of Johnson and get someone better to replace him we’re talking about a completely different Penguins team than the embarrassment that was last year.

Cuz they signed Tanev.
McCann-Crosby-Guentzel
Galchenyuk-Malkin-Hornqvist
Kahun-Bjugstad-Tanev
Blueger-AstonReese-Simon

He just doesn't fit here

Because cap space is a necessity with this team.

If he's able to take another step forward this season, he's definitely worth a 1st at the deadline. A 50+ point defensive centre who'd still be an RFA at the end of the season? You can definitely get a late 1st for that.

Oh yes for sure. If they acquire a real 2nd pairing LHD such as Brodin/Edmunson etc, a 3rd line centre like Tierney and Galchenyuk lights it up with Malkin, I could easily see them finishing top 3. But for now, the defense is suspect imo

The defense is a mess but I think in this scenario they probably get by with McCabe because if you have defenseman who can get the puck up the ice and not get trapped in their own zone it makes everyone around them that much better. Plus Murray will definitely return to form with a competent defense.

Which would make sense because Johnson's actual salary drops below his cap hit. Melnyk's favorite kind of contract!

Except he's never had a 50 point season. He's not worth a 1st

He had 48 last year and has gained on his total every year, should easily hit 50 this year

As I said, if he continues to progress as he has the last few years, he can absolutely be a 50 point guy. He's a guy who can be a solid two way 2C, and I don't think he's even that far from that already. If I'm Ottawa, and I'm not getting a 1st or two 2nds, I'm going to keep him, because he's still young enough that he can be a valuable player on this team when we come out of the rebuild.

My main point though,is that the above trade was neither an accurate assessment of Chris Tierney's value, nor the cost it would take to move Jack Johnson's contract.
