unless you're planning on Marner sitting out a year, this deal walks him directly to UFA without buying out any UFA years.

why is that obvious? This is for the season after this one, and has him signed for 3 more years.

If anything would seem obvious it would be that he signed a 4 year deal.

unless he is sitting out for this upcoming season, it surely does take him to UFA. if you have 7 years accrued in the league, you're a UFA 100%.

You just made a mistake by signing him for 3 years rather than two in 2020. In a way... if he gets a high base salary in his final year, this could walk him to ufa as he could wait till he gets his QO and sign it.

The whole UFA years isn't nearly as big a deal as people make it out to be. The biggest thing is players won't be getting term when they are pushing towards 30 anymore. Why? Because in the vast majority of cases, players really start declining in their 30's so waiting to make the big bucks like players did a number of years ago doesn't make any sense. Teams won't pay them those kind of dollars in the future. Get what you can when you are producing the most because you won't get paid for that later in your career. Teams aren't going to be lining up to sign 28 year olds for 7 years just to see them bought out when they are 34 like Corey Perry.

it might not be the biggest deal to fans, but i think it's a really big deal for general managers. Case in point, it has...literally...never...happened.

True, and I don't think its going to happen in TO either. Ferris is going to lose another negotiation where he grandstanded and I think he's going to be in big trouble. At some point his hubris is going to cost him clients. If you are the only person in the world who sees something a certain way, generally its because you are wrong.

eh. i kinda see it his way. i think a bunch of people do. There are a lot of people (i am not one of them), that think Marner is better than Matthews. I can see how he would want the same deal as matthews. I've always said 5x10.5 is the fair compromise.

You just can't have Matthews, Nylander and Marner needing contracts at the same time. Marner is definitely not better than Matthews, the only people who think that are either people who value him being Canadian way too much or are idiots. Matthews is the best player in TO, Marner is 3rd at best. I'd even say Rielly and Andersen are better and Nylander is really close.

the Nylander thing I just don't get. I just can't see it. I don't think they should have signed him. Marner has lead the team in points back to back seasons. I know that isn't the be all end all, but when it comes to contracts, it's pretty important.

His numbers are inflated by the PP, Nylander has never been given half the opportunities that Marner has. Babs isn't a very good coach and his ego is really starting to wear thin. Who plays Patrick Marleau more in game 6 and 7 than Matthews? Nylander has better numbers than Marner in a lot of areas but hasn't been given the PP time or scoring support that Marner has. They are a lot closer than most people seem to realize. Its not that Marner is overrated, its that Nylander get's zero respect.
