The rich get richer

Description
Point contract is cap%-equivalent to the sweetheart deal Kucherov bridged for: nothing bad happens to the Tampa Bay Lightning contract-wise and considering Point has expressed a desire to stay and win with the Lightning, I can see him taking some stupid bridge deal that enables the team to do exactly that.

F*cking baffles my mind that Vancouver willingly gave this team ANOTHER 1st Round Pick which allows the Bolts - with impunity - to go get a monster rental this season with any of their two next firsts OR the Cancucks' selection and improve on this roster. Like, Spurgeon maybe?? Where else do you add? I don't even care if Tampa doesn't get it done in 19/20, it's been phenomenal to watch Yzerman and Brisebois construct such dominant rosters with a salary cap.

The length of the "holdout" - if you can call it that - as well as most RFAs wanting to maximize their earnings and chances of winning suggests that guys like Marner, Point, and Rantanen are more likely to sign shorter-term bridge deals than long-term deals around Aho/Draisaitl money.

Consider that Point straight-up refused a handsome offer sheet to remain with the Ligntning, I think this is some of the typical Tampa voodoo, wizardry, and bullsh*t that SHOULD be expected this summer.

Wish this would happen but it won’t. But there’s a couple million more in the cap and they can create 1.3M more by moving Condon

If Point signs this deal, he is a god and I will personally organize a cult based around worshiping him.

Yes Point has said he wants to stay in Tampa but what does that mean in terms of $$$.

I do not see Point signing this type of deal, but I do admit that he maybe willing to sign a discount.
Discount compared to what though???

Point is legitimately a #1 C, his signing will be used as measuring stick for other players and other GMs.

I am thinking his cap number will be 8 million to 9.5 million range and at even 8 million that is discount, what term though??? Lesser the $$$ lesser the term is logical but to think he will sign anything less 8 is foolish.

Point's agent will likely using Aho as starting point.

I want to call out some BS. When there's Toronto ACGM's people come there and like to tell Leafs fans how Marner's not getting any less than 11 million so then why isn't Point getting that kind of money?

Point being a C (a very good one) should be getting at least 8 million which I feel is a discount, probably more.

I feel horribly for whoever taught you how to read, but Domingue is far from a "bad backup goalie".

If he's signing a bridge deal, that number will not be greater than $7M. Anything north of it isn't value and is going to further break the RFA market. Tampa has a situation where there are too many good RFAs coming up for new deals that paying each player exact value right now isn't feasible. Point - based on his comments - is arguably the most likely to take a substantial discount over a short period of time. His agent might look to Aho as a comparable, but Brisebois will cite MacKinnon and Barkov who are known right now to be better players than Point is.

My best guess is a handshake deal for after this contract where a number closer to $10M is more viable. Tampa is the place to win right now, no other team has better on-paper or statistical odds to win a cup today. No reason to assume he doesn't want to have a career with those kinds of chances as opposed to a season.

The number of unintelligent Leafs fans or people here strictly to troll the Leafs shouldn't influence your need to "call out BS". If you can't sort through intelligent, worthwhile posts on your own, that's your problem. Marner and his agent (and dad) should be asking for every cent they can get, but the reality is no team will give them that kind of money. Everyone and their dog figured Nylander would get between $6.5M-$7M despite all the tales of his ask being north of $8M. Look where his hit ended up. Holdouts are for show and based on how Nylander fared last season and how many RFAs today will end up faring if they follow in his path, you'll see a lot of these cases settled sooner with term being the primary sacrifice.

Point - and any RFA really - should be asking for the moon. That's their agent's job, and if the average NHL career is over by the time a player is in their early to mid-thirties, they only have a short window to make money doing one of the few things they're actually good at. The problem there is these guys aren't playing for money. It's a necessary bonus to their craft that they be paid in millions, but every NHL player will tell you it started with a specific dream and that they're still playing to have their name physically etched in history and the Stanley Cup. These players know how hard it is to win with a record-setting roster - they got swept last year for Christ's sake - and are all aware that there are overbearing rules that govern roster construction. If they want to win together, they can't all take their share of the pie. 80%? Still a lot, but a more reasonable ask. As the older, maybe overpaid guys are traded or expire, there's more room for them to earn. The cap is progressive despite owners consistently getting in the way of their own success.

I'm confident Point signs a similar deal. The kid's a true competitor and if it means taking a fraction of his value to realize his dreams before cashing in, he'll do it. They all would, and we would too.

Korenar was exceptionally mediocre with the Barracuda this season and Bibeau managed to be worse than that. Shortridge might be a decent option but he has almost no professional experience. Is the plan to ride him out into the NHL right away? None of those three are ready and we already know the tandem of Jones/Dell can't be trusted to do anything beyond getting the Sharks into the playoffs.
