I still dont understand Bennings plan

Initial Creation Date: Aug 9, 2019
Published: Aug 9, 2019 at 2:08 pm
Team: 2019-20 Vancouver Canucks
Team Explanation
They still lack depth up front, their defence is old and outside of Hughes not very offensive and their goaltending isn't what you'd call elite. Sure they are close to a playoff team in the west but that is mainly because the west isn't that strong currently. They could use an entirely new 3rd line and a couple more defenceman.

Also they are over the cap and don't have a 1st rounder in one of the next 2 years. May have to move the other just to get rid of Eriksson.

Why do Canuck fans trust Benning so much?

If he told everyone his plan, would make it easier or harder to accomplish?

The only explanation that I can see is that he has no plan and its a disaster.

For the next 2 years the defense will be elder,Myers,Hughes, stecher. Once elder retires they will have some of the prospects to fill positions. Still some bad contracts but as the team gets better they will move or buyout. The team will soon be able to attract ufa’s and with the prospects moving up think Vancouver could be in a good spot. Things are just progressing slowly.

Why? Because Petterson is great, Boeser looks really good and Horvat is a top level 2C? Other than that you have Hughes and a bunch of average players. The defence isn't going to be very good and you're over the cap by a fair amount.

What are the answers here? What direction are you going? Signing guys in their late 20's for 4 year terms for way more than the players deserve is a recipe for cap hell which they are pretty much in and that is not optimal for a team that is still rebuilding.

Is Benning just doing stuff because he really doesn't understand what the salary cap is? Or is he in a fantasy world that moving overpriced depth players is easy to do?

I don't get it.

When I look at their roster, I wish they would have not signed vets, the past 3 years and just tanked, they'd have more high end prospects and a much better cap situation. Too many GM's seem to look at the next 3 years and nothing beyond that. Its a terrible way to handle asset management. If you make a move for now, you have to see what kind of long term ramifications it has. Who's going to need to be signed when and at what price. Looking at Vancouver, I think Benning thinks its still the early 2000's and Boeser and Petterson will be signing 4 year bridge deals less than 5 million. Good luck with that.

Benning is a mediocre GM at best. He has shown no creativity, but his plan has always been the same: draft well, bring in veterans (irrespective of cost) that he thinks can help the team compete, and have players that can help protect the young players.

He doesn't care about asset management, long-term salary cap implications, weaponizing the cap, accumulating draft picks...

BTW, Boesser doesn't get $7.5M for 5 years. I think the term is aleast 6 years for that money.

It seems like benning was getting pressure from ownership to make the playoffs asap. That's the only explanation i can see for signing all these average players for too much money and term. He's trying to force his way out of what couldve been a really good rebuild just like the rangers are doing. Granted the rangers are atleast overpaying really good players and vancouver is overpaying average players. Would've been nice to see these gm's/owners be a little more patient and let their rebuilds run their course

I think Benning wanted to make the playoffs every year irrespective of ownership. He has drafted well, but never committed to a rebuild ever.

I am not sold on drafting well, he got it right with Petterson, Boeser and likely Hughes as well. Horvat was a win but beyond that, there hasn't been anyone that really jumps out at you currently. The depth pieces he just misses on.

You might be right. Too early to tell on the rounds 2-7 for 2015 and beyond. I do give me credit for three you mentioned.
