Malkin is 33, has a 9.5 million cap hit, and is a liability in the defensive zone. Domi is obviously not as talented, but is only 24, , has room to improve, a much lower cap hit, and plays better defense. Montreal is not getting the Malkin of the last 7-8 years, they will be getting an older, slower player, still with skills, but in a declining state. Domi has not yet hit his ceiling. When making a trade like this you have to look at what you expect to get going forward. Even so, if the proposed trade was Domi for Malkin, it would be slanted in Montreal's favour. However, with all the other pieces involved, Montreal is losing this trade.
