Top 10 players at their positions right now

Description
I saw someone make some stupid joke post but it got me curious.

Note I am talking about their ability right now. If someone is 31 and likely to decline relative to someone 23 and likely to improve that effects their value but not their rank on these lists.

Let the arguments ensue

Barkov should be no lower than 4th. Elite offensive player and far and away the best defensive forward in the game.

To put Matthews and Kopitar on this list is an insult to many others

So I fully admit I don't watch all that much Florida hockey. I know he is a top end defensive player, but Bergeron is the best defensive forward of this generation. You're comfortable saying he is ahead of Bergeron already? Ahead of Kopitar too? Or this year's winner for the Selke O'Reilly? Or the runner up Stone? (or the other runner up Bergeron above)

Kopitar is an insult sure but Matthews, (if he plays a full 82 games) will jump to the top 5 for sure, possibly top 3.

I agree Matthews isn’t Better than barkov or Tavares. I’d argue Kuzy when he has his **** together is better than Matthews.

Kopitar is a tier below many of the others offensively, but is only behind Bergeron and maybe Barkov defensively.

Matthews is third in goals by a C since he joined the league 3 years ago http://hkref.com/tiny/J7W65 and has played the second least GP of the players in the top 10 (Malkin has played 7 less). He's first in goals per game. Hes the best goal scoring C in the league. That isn't an opinion, its a fact.

He's also 14th in points. So best goal scorer, just below top 10 in points. Not really sure why you think he shouldn't be top 10?

Just to expand on my Matthews comment. If we look at last two years:

Matthews is 8 in goals and 24th in points, which doesn't sound so great. http://hkref.com/tiny/zknFX But when you realize its all because he has been injured and look at per game stats, he jumps to again 1st in goals per game and 10th in points per game.

He is a top 10 C, as the best goal scoring c and bottom end top 10 by points in general. If you want to argue his injury concerns should keep him out of the top 10, I could accept that. But any other argument (unless its one I'm not aware), I suspect is just hating on him/Leafs

Kopitar isn't really in that conversation anymore with the emergence of guys like ROR, Barkov and Stone, but I would definitely put him ahead of Bergeron.

Mark Stone is my favorite player, and for my Money he's a top 5 winger, and a top 3 defensive player in the league, but even he's pretty far off.

Barkov is by far the best when it comes to stopping zone entries, and breaking up plays in transition.

If you ask me, the top 5 is Barkov, Stone, Bergeron, O'Reilly and either Couturier or Landeskog.

Over the last three years, you got all the top 25 point getters except Draisaitl, Barkov, Backstrom, and Monahan:
http://www.nhl.com/stats/player?aggregate=1&report=skaterpoints&reportType=season&seasonFrom=20162017&seasonTo=20182019&gameType=2&filter=gamesPlayed,gte,1&sort=evPoints,points

Good show.

Draisatl is 4th on LW and Barkov is 7th for C's

Backstrom would have been there a year or so ago and perhaps should be above Kopitar. But I think he's losing a step. Also C is just so damn deep.

I don't think Monahan would even be in the top 14 C's for me

Who should panarin be above on LW?

Gibson should be higher? He's second highest...

Who should be below Klingberg? I can't really say anyone besides maybe Dumba.

Who is Tkachuk or Lindholm or Tkachuk better than that's up there?

Maybe so on McDonough

So your complaint is that Gibson is better than the reigning Vezina winner?

And I suppose on Skinner. The reason I like Skinner is he is one of the best pure goal scorers in the league. But you are right tkachuk is likely better than him at body other facets of the game

The vezina trophy isnt indicative of the best goalie in the league

It's indicative of the goalie who performed the best that year. I agree. But I would say Vasi has been a slightly better goalie than Gibson over the last 2-3 years. I'm not sure why that would be a hot take. For that matter I think most would say I have Gibson a bit high if anything.
