Kings only do that trade if the 1st round pick is in 2020. Don't think you'll get back a 5th round pick either. You might get a struggling prospect like Rymsha, Eyssimont, or Reddekopp.

You'd have to add more for Klefbom, like Rust and something else, maybe if Galchenyuk came with some kind of contract extension that'd help but idk if that's possible.

Come on man, the JJ contract isn't THAT bad, Marleau (over 6 mil of completely dead cap in one year) took a first to move, and most people considered that an overpayment, JJ makes 13 mil, if you play him for 1 year, he's worth about 1.5 I'd say, then bury him for the next leaving a little under 4 mil in completely dead cap over two years, then you buy him out, it's just over a mil for 4 years, that's 8 mil in dead cap over 6 years, and as buyouts show, it's more favorable to spread out the cap over a longer term so I'd say 8 mil over 6 years is roughly equal to 6 mil for a year, assuming there's no salary coming back (which is also somewhat unlikely) so don't make it sound like there's no chance LAK accepts a free first round pick that very well could be a lottery pick

Yes, it's that bad. Marleau's contract was for only one year, the actual cash owed was negligible, Carolina didn't need the cap space, and they still got a 1st round pick for taking it on. They bought it out and went on their way, and the cap hit will be completely off the books next season.

Johnson's contract is for four (!!!) more seasons, meaning if they play him for a year and buy him out next summer, his contract will be on the books until 2026. The Kings cap situation might not be an issue now, but who knows what it will look like in 6 more years. If the Pens want the Kings (or any other team for that matter) to take on that awful contract, they're going to have to part with a 1st round pick at minimum.

I'm not saying that the Kings won't trade for JJ, but they're going to want an unmitigated 1st round pick from the 2020 draft in return. You're welcome to add top 10 protection on it if you want, just like the Leafs did in the Marleau trade.

Marleau had a NMC that limited where they could send him, he had total control and everything about that situation is completely and totally different than JJ.
It's not even worth arguing with these people who magically think they penguins are giving up a 1st to move him. They are the same ones who think Pernell gets a huge return and pool party is somehow worth a legit middle 6 winger, along with a slew of other crazy ass things.

Adding Rust would not be bad for the Penguins. It would create more cap space to trade for Krieder or Jason Zucker. I like the Edmonton idea and think sending JJ to the Kings is possible.

The Pens don't have to give up a 1st to move him. They could also keep him or buy him out themselves.

yeah or they can move him for a mid round pick.

People on here are nuts.
The biggest problem with moving JJ is who replaces him. They aren't exactly deep on the blue line at the moment.

Johnson is a replacement-level defenseman locked up to a contract worth 3x his value for 4 more years. No one is going to give up anything of value for that.

You can argue that a 1st is too much and they might be able to move him for a 2nd and a B prospect, or for a mitigated 1st round pick (i.e. a 3rd round pick heads back to Pittsburgh in exchange for Johnson or a 1st), but it is unrealistic to argue that Pittsburgh can move his contract without adding a sweetener or taking back an equally bad contract.

That's the thing about replacement-level defensemen. They're easily replaceable. The Pens can sign Phaneuf or MacDonald to a one-year league-minimum contract and be in a better position than they were with JJ on the roster.

that's non sense. JJ played 2nd pairing on his off side almost all of last year.
He played decently on his natural side and the numbers showed that.
Furthermore, he hits people. Which is something a lot of teams lack.
He'd be much better in a 3rd pairing role with limited minutes. Given it's a large contract for that, but he's not a useless player.
You just like to troll that mess out here constantly. Much like people saying Pernell would get a 1st and solid player, or a top line winger. Or pool party is worth a mid 6 forward, or any other crazy ass thing people say on here. Moving him isn't the issue. The issue is the only person they have who is left handed to fill in is Riikola and while he has potential he didn't look great and is coming back off injury.
They just don't have any depth on their blue line to move him. They need to bring someone in capable of playing minutes before they send him out and their aren't really good options. Both the ones you listed are far worse options.
