This is purely dumb. SJS is built to contend.

Even if SJS doesn't tank Ottawa would rather have the picks than Evander Kane. Even if it's in the 18-31 range, it's no contest which is more valuable to a rebuilding team.

You say that like Kane is a bad player. Putting up 30 goals and playing heavy minutes on the pk (when he's not in the box) while being a very solid 2 way winger is pretty damn good in this league

I'm not saying he's a bad player at all. I actually think he's really good, and if the Sens had opted to commit to being contenders with that core they had (Karlsson, Duchene, Hoffman, Stone, Dzingel, Chabot), then I'd definitely be open to adding a player like that tho what could have been a very potent offense. That said, they instead opted to blow it all up, and rebuild, so by the time they are ready to seriously contend for a cup, Kane is likely well into his 30's and is likely looking at his best days in the rearview mirror. Compare that to a player they could have with that 1st, who will be a decade younger and likely be just entering the prime of his career.
