The Wings are way better off to keep Athanasiou and extend him for as long as possible then trade him for those pieces.

Krug definitely resigns there, he’s from Michigan and has said he wants to play in Detroit

maybe but if he gets a good money offer from a contender maybe he doesn't, everyone said all of this about trouba for last 2 years and how did that turn out. I dont love the player I dont think hes going to be worth what that next contracts going to be

Can you reference an instance where he says he wants to play in Detroit? I don’t think it happened

He has stated numerous times that he would love to play for Blashill, Blashill did coach him in Indiana. And credits him for becoming the player he became.

The problem is Krug is a free agent and can walk after this year whether he said he does or does not want to play for Wings/Blashill. The are no guarantees, except that AA is a RFA and can sign with another club but Wings can take a set number of picks or match the contract. That is way better than trading for a guy who can walk and nothing the Wings can do but watch him go somewhere else..

On top of it all the Wings will not be contenders this year and they can sign Krug next year.
