Description
Devils fans are posting trades to add a proven top pairing LHD, and get the most out of Subban's first season in NJ. Last year Kempny finished 39th among defensemen in shots blocked, 44th in even strength points, 9th in plus/minus. He was great in helping the Caps win the Cup in '18.

I'm not sure if either side considers moving any of the players involved, here, but I think it comes out to a win-win.
Trades
NJD
  1. Kempný, Michal
  2. Stephenson, Chandler
Additional Details:
Kempny's got three years left at 2/3 the cap hit you'd expect for a top pairing stay-at-home defenseman. Stephenson is a poor man's Beagle. Good at faceoffs and PK, and won the Cup, but if the Caps add Coleman, who adds some real offense, they might as well trade him.
WSH
  1. Coleman, Blake
  2. McLeod, Michael
  3. 2020 4th round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
Coleman's got two years left at 2/3 the cap hit the Caps just signed two other 20 goal checking wings for. Two years is less than three, and bottom six wings aren't as valuable as top pair defensemen. McLeod is almost looking like a bust, but had so much potential he still brings decent trade value.

What is the win for the Caps? Trading a top 4 defenseman on a good contract and getting offensive players you don't need

Great question: The Caps still have four top-four defensemen, so it's a cheap top-four defenseman they don't need vs. cheap offensive guys they don't need. And at that point it comes down to value, even though for a lot of Caps fans, Kempny is perfect in every way and should never go anywhere.

I guess if they asked for more, maybe it'd be a Copley/Blackwood swap? That would give them cap space to carry 23 healthy guys on opening night, but at that point I'm guessing the 4th goes the other way, due to the age difference between the two promising backups.

Yeah, if you scroll back through some threads, or Nurse, or a bunch of guys. Click, "armchair gm," select "Devils," and if it plays left defense, they're talking about it. Or just start your own.

Brodie is a lefty playing right side. We already have 1. Subban 2. Severson. 3. Carrick on the right.
Its not a bad idea but it probably sends Smith to Binghamton. What woudl be the ask from the Flames?

I am guessing that Vatanen moves to the top left spot to play with PK.
Some mix of Greene/Smith/Butcher after that.

Mueller as the extra who can play both sides.
I think it all depends on how Smith starts out. If its too much than help is needed. If he holds his own we play the cards we have. As a UFA I would not mind looking at Brodie at all.
Also, Shero could move Vatanen with a few adds to get a a real good leftie it would be great.
A future D core of:
Smith/Nurse/Butcher
PK/Brodie/Severson

Looks good to me

Sorry but Djoos isn't a top 4 defenseman yet. He was 'lucky' that Kempny got injured because he was scratched in 11 of the 12 matches before the Kempny injury. He's an unproven player who might start the season as a scratch again.

Kempny has good chemistry with Carlson and the Caps missed him during the playoffs. He's definitely not a player they don't need. Maybe if you're really high on Djoos, trade for him :-)

Kempny's definitely valuable, and I do think Djoos breaks out as a top four guy in the next couple years, but Carlson, Orlov, Jensen, and Gudas each averaged 19 minutes last year, with 20+ points, and good positioning. A team that wants to contend should try to carry five or six "top-four" guys, rather than sell them off cheap, but Coleman's had three 20 goal seasons and McLeod's a recent top-20 pick with... okay... yeah.... just 3 NHL points by age 21. But he could still put it together. He hits a little.

I mean, I think Djoos would be a great partner for Subban or Carlson, but I don't imagine the Devils make an offer that's better than just keeping him, until he proves it. But don't take my word for it: https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/261802&post_id=1033383

Vatanen's a pretty good offensive defenseman, and Nurse just had a terrific year, with 42 points! Good ideas. Smith should be terrific in three or four years. I just don't know that it usually works well to put two terrific offensive defensemen together on the same pair. Usually teams have better luck putting a good stay at home guy on the top pair so their #1D knows it's always safe to rush the puck.

Kempny's career high is 20 points in 18-19, but he helped John Carlson hit a career high of 70, and tie a personal best for plus/minus at +21. So Kempny's a good top pairing stay at home guy... I'm not trying to give him away. Just thought he was someone the Devils might be interested in trying to talk the Caps out of, in order to help PK do his best. As to what pieces would get that done, I'm no wiser than you.
