If you look at their numbers, Matthews took less time to get to a point-per-game level, is two years younger, and may be more likely to resign given proximity to home. Leafs' interest would be because they need more cap space than Colorado now. I doubt either team would want to make that trade, but none would be losing.

Matthews may be better than MacKinnon one day but presently, at almost 5M less, MacKinnon is twice as valuable for the next 4 years. In a cap world, everything comes down to dollars.

Colorado would absolutely lose that trade, they lose their franchise player on the second best contract in the league (labanc 1st) for a great player although not as good but on the worst contract... guy gets 11.5+ million a year until he leaves to free agency for nothing....

That is a loss

And Matthews has also already missed around the same number of games as MacKinnon has missed in over twice as many seasons. MacKinnon is absolutely the better player right now for $5m less in cap hit and for a team that should be going for it now while Tavares is in his prime, this is all that should matter. Leafs would win that trade and it isn't even close.

Col would be losing, they are getting a similar player for double the money. Not too mention "proximity" to home doesn't mean a hell of a lot. Just ask JT. Last time I checked NY is "pretty close" to T.O. Home, is pretty close to home.

Since when did points decide if a player was better alone? When MacKinnon entered the league he was on a crapshoot of a team Matthews didnt have that luxary. His team was good the same yeat he entered.

I’m honestly surprised you didn’t propose a Matthews for mackinnon + girard trade. Great job!
