I'd do it.
Even swapping Juulsen for Fleury if TML prefers.

Yup, that's the idea.
Brook takes Petry's spot.
Poehling takes Danaults spot.
Nylander takes the vacant Top-6 scoring slot.

So the idea is that MTL loses the trade to fill a need that could be filled internally as soon as training camp? And not even the biggest need the team has. As for Nylander filling a top-6 scoring role, he is a 20 goal guy, Tatar, Domi, Gallagher, Drouin, and Byron are already that with KK, Suzuki and Poehling potentially doing that this season.

Petry and Danault are UFA in 2 years.
Danault will be due for a raise, and Petry will get UFA $$.

Montreal adds 7 mill / Top6 for the next 5 years without sacrificing any real depth.

What are you guys doing.... this is terrible asset management. Nylander is and would not be a priority for MTL, yet you're paying an absolute premium price to acquire him. He would make a solid addition to the top 6, don't get me wrong. But giving Petry with salary retention at a $3mil aav for 2 years and Danault at a measly $3mil aav for 2 years too, are worth their weight in gold all on their own. Juulsen is still a valuable RD prospect as well and would make a lethal (and cheap!) 3rd pairing combo with him and Dermott....

Talk about giving the leafs everything they need... all for getting a player MTL doesn't even need in Nylander...

I agree, the trade is tilted and I still wouldn’t want to do it as a leafs fan. Wouldn’t want to but I would have to because it’s so lobsided.

Would Montreal not be better off with a top pairing lhd?

Not at all how it's going to be working with MTL at RD this upcoming season or even the following season. Although Weber is still a powerhouse defensively, same for his shot on offense, his minutes will need to go down. Playing him over 25minutes a game all year is just a recipe for him to get hurt or be completely drained come playoff time. He's turning 34 in a few days. Habs are in a perfect position to roll with Weber as a #1a with Petry as a #1b. No chance someone like Brook, Fleury, or Juulsen come training camp take Petry's spot just like that. Only one close right now is Juulsen (because he already did it for like 15 games, but that's still too small a sample size)

Nylander is the best player in that trade, so Montreal wins that one.

So if I give you a 20 dollar bill and you give me 4 10's you come out ahead of the deal because you got the biggest bill? If Nylander is the best player in the trade, it is not by much, a top 3-4 RD that can produce offense and is decent defensively is only worth a middle 6, 20 goal winger? And Nylander has a higher cap hit. He is younger, which is the only thing that would push Nylander above Petry, once you retain 2.5 million of salary on Petry, Nylander for Petry is a wash at best, and likely a win for Toronto. Then Danault alone is worth more than the rest of the package included with Nylander.
