TDL If Contending

Created by: bbell080
Team: 2019-20 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 12, 2019
Published: Aug. 12, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Moves to try and make the Oilers better at the TDL if they are in a good spot. It involves moving on from some players I think are overvalued, and bringing in some new wingers for RNH. This gives the Oilers a chance to compete this year (although probably not very deep) and then next year re-assign the $14M in cap space they'll have between Toffoli, JGP, and Galchenyuk, if they decide to retain any of them.
Trades
1.
EDM
  1. 2020 5th round pick (TBL)
Additional Details:
Contract dump to make space at TDL
OTT
  1. Gagner, Sam
  2. 2020 2nd round pick (EDM)
2.
EDM
  1. Toffoli, Tyler
Additional Details:
Might cost a 1st if Toffoli can find his groove early in the year, but this would be a good add for the Oilers.
LAK
  1. 2020 3rd round pick (EDM)
  2. 2021 2nd round pick (EDM)
3.
EDM
  1. Galchenyuk, Alex
  2. 2020 3rd round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
I think Nurse is overvalued, and rather than end up where the Sens did with Ceci, the Oilers should move him now and get some value back. Imagine if the Sens had agreed to the Hall for Ceci trade
4.
EDM
  1. Pageau, Jean-Gabriel ($1,550,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Sens retain a bunch of cap, and the Oilers get a 3rd C to energize the bottom 6
OTT
  1. Benning, Matthew
  2. 2020 3rd round pick (PIT)
  3. 2021 3rd round pick (EDM)
  4. 2022 2nd round pick (EDM)

The defense is now awful and the goalies give you a shot at a lottery pick

I didn't sign them! The D is a mess, so if they're contending it's going to be rough no matter what.

Its been awful for a while. Klefbom is the closest thing the team has to a 1st pair defender and he's probably better suited on the 2nd pair, give him a decent partner and it would help but the only one on the roster who looks like he may one day be a top #1 defenceman is Bouchard and he's a few years away from that.

So if you're contending at the TDL, your plan is to gut the defense so you can get a couple middle sixers? Nurse and Benning are literally your two best defenders from 2017-2019 by Wins Above Replacement, and both Pageau and Galchenyuk are below replacement value over the same span (Galchenyuk being the worst of the two). Toffoli trade is nice tho

I really like Bouchard and a few other prospects they have but I dont see them contending any time soon. It's almost like they should rebuild lol

They absolutely should! They have 2 seasons to get this organization moving in the right direction or McDavid will demand a trade and that is going to be a terrible dark day for the Oilers. There is no quick fix here. They need about 6 better forwards and 3-4 better defenceman and 2 goalies before they can be a contender. That can't be done via trade and FA signings.

They are digging more holes trying to fill the other holes they already dug and its hilarious. They have been rebuilding for so many years and had so many great picks. I cant name pretty much any picks they have made after the 1st round in a long time.

Yeah you have to go back more than a decade to find that. They have zero development abilities which is why the Oilers are where they are at. And from what I have been hearing and seeing, Holland is going to stick a band aid on this mess and the wheels will continue to spin. Having the best player in the world and pretty much a bunch of plugs isn't a winning formula. I see only about 6 players worth keeping and the rest could be flipped for assets and then they should draft and develop for the next 2 seasons in hopes of icing a young exciting team in 3 or 4 years while McDavid is still in his prime.

My prediction, after July 2021, McDavid demands a trade and has a Full NMC which would mean the return is going to be very low in comparison to McDavid's worth. Its going to be a very dark day for the franchise and may result in a complete restructure which should be done starting last season but the old boys don't understand how out of touch they are.
