Created by: Billy739
Team: 2019-20 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 13, 2019
Published: Aug. 13, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
we got every core forward but Byron and Drouin to re-sign after the next 2 seasons with Weber and Price on the back end for 27m . Chariot ,Kulak,Alzner and Reilly account for another 10m leaving MTL 44 million to re-sign :
Tatar
Petry
Gallagher
Danault
Domi
Poehling
Kotkanemi
Armia
Lehkonen
Juulsen
Mete
among others who will not be arbitration eligible with little negotiating power .

the idea is to keep the core together we move a Forward and a Defensman now for more cost effectively long term fits .

we're not building for a playoff run
we're building for a cup run
that might not be this year but
its important to get players who
are competitive now with potential to grow

Bottom 6 is a mixture of Speed and Size . 4/8 rotating through are 6'2-6'4 giving us what we need for a playoff run long term with 4/8 speed based players to balance things out.

Weal ,Cousins and Hudon will in time be replaced by Suzuki,Evans and Teasdale sooner then later as they begin their NHL journey .

MTL pays a high price but its worth it in the end as we're a true 4 line team suited to Julien's strengths .

Fischer,Ritchie ,Pitlick and Zadorov are all strong piece's under 25 that are cost efficient for the next 3 years where we have to pay a lot of core players . sure we could maybe get bigger piece's but they come at a higher cap while these pieces fit our system in a low risk low cap gamble

Barbashev is a calculated risk
if STL matches then Weal gets the start.
but STL has its own cap issues long term
im not convinced they're willing to invest in Barbs outside maybe a 1-2 years deal as 1.5-1.75m cap

2020 3rd round pick
Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Fischer, Christian
  2. 2020 2nd round pick (ARI)
Additional Details:
PHX RD are all older and less effective then Petry
their RD is stellar but OEL needs someone of value
to play with on PP now that Kessel's here he'll need
support from his blue line

Fischer or Garland works
heck even a Merkley i'm flexible
ARI
  1. Petry, Jeff ($2,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
MTL adds a RW with a history of playing with 3 of our forwards in Weal,Cousins and Domi so it gives us options on our bottom 3 lines
2.
MTL
  1. Zadorov, Nikita
  2. 2020 1st round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
COL moves a player they've had trouble signing long term for Tatar and Kulak who will help COL today as well as two 2nd's one of which is a conditional pick that could become a 1st if Zadorov re-signs in MTL
COL
  1. Kulak, Brett
  2. Tatar, Tomas ($1,000,000 retained)
  3. 2020 2nd round pick (CHI)
  4. 2021 2nd round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Conditional 2nd in 2021 (MTL) becomes a 1st in 2021 if Zadorov Signs with MTL longer then 1 year
3.
MTL
  1. Pitlick, Rem
  2. 2020 3rd round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
MTL gets 2 years younger and gets a waiver exempt player
NSH
  1. Lehkonen, Artturi
  2. 2020 4th round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
NSH gets a player ready today for a playoff run.
Lehkonen's coming off a career high and is primarily used to cover weak defensively minded Centers as he has in MTL with Galchenyuk,Drouin,Domi and Kotkanemi since joining the league .

MTL gets an upgraded pick because NSH got a small Cup window with Rinne and this helps them go on a run for little to no cost
4.
MTL
  1. Ritchie, Nick
Additional Details:
Ritchie is a momentium changer we need after letting Shaw go.

Ritchie hits hard , he fights for his teammates and he can put the puck in the net . that being said he's best used in a 3rd line capacity longterm
ANA
  1. Fleury, Cale
  2. Ikonen, Joni [Reserve List]
  3. 2020 2nd round pick (MTL)
  4. 2021 3rd round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
ANA gets to develop Muhara-Fleury together in hopes they continue their league leading WHL PP chemistry into the AHL and eventually the NHL.

Ikonen is a future 2nd/3rd line NHL Center developing over in Finland. he's got another 2 years needed to develop but after that should be a solid NHL option

2nd and 3rd give ANA a chance to build up their depth

you got a A- Prospect, B+ Prospect , 2nd and a 3rd

Nick Ritchie's a 3rd line winger , a really solid 3rd line winger but nevertheless he has no potential for top 6 as he can only score vs bottom 6 match ups not head to head vs elite talent .

i mean if you dont like a player and want to swap for a similar value then sure no problem
but Nick Ritchie's value isnt worth that much more then a A- prospect,B+ prospect , 2nd and a 3rd .
maybe two 2nd's and make Ikonen swap out for Ylonen or swap out Fleury for Brook then sure

So two 2nd's, Ylonen and Brook for Ritchie ? Habs would be nuts to accept such an horrible deal.

In my opinion, you overpay in all cases. I think you under estimate Ylonen, Brook and Fleury. Ikonen is a question mark due how he recovers from his injuries. If those guys are involved in trade discussions, it has to be for more than a 3rd liner.

The Barbashev OS might work since the Blues are in a pinch right now and have some other guys that are NHL ready to fill that spot. But I don't know what you mean about long-term cap issues for STL - all of that is very much up in the air until we know what happens with Pietrangelo and Schenn. I think those low-value offer sheets are the most attractive, but they're also susceptible to a counter-attack if there are any RFAs that become tricky for MTL in the near future (could be Mete, Poehling, etc.)

Chiarot, Reilly, Kulak account for 6,85 million not 10. Price and Weber account for 18,3 million not 27.
Trading Lehkonen for a center is completely unnecessary

Underselling Petry big time here, trading for Fisher because he played on a underperforming Yotes team does not add value to that 3rd liner.

Why giving away Petry with -almost- half salary retained and get a 2nd round and 2nd/3rd liner/AHL players (Refering to Merkley who has yet to play in the NHL)?? For this returned I'll just keep it until the end of his contract.

You're overpaying for Zadorov as a rental that -as you've said- had problem with the organisation so most likely the Avs wants him out at the right price.

Pitlick is a good player (Killed it in his senior year NCAA) but how many centers de we need?

Who would trade 2 prospects and 2mid picks for sandpaper that as yet to play a full season in his 4 year career? We've traded Shaw for picks and I was estatic about the return, now I'll give it back plus two prospects for a guy inferior to him (Bigger physically yes but less goals, assist and a worst +/-)?

All of the newcomers are young yes, but they don't show any kind of high ceiling profile. You already know what you got with them, compared to Domi that had talent but was just not showing it.

same was said about Domi when we traded Galchenyuk for him
Fischer has upside as a goal scorer who's just 22 and has chemistry with Domi
if Shaw can hit almost 50 points with Domi i think it is plausible the Fischer could to

the way MTL's been drafting that 2nd could turn into a Ylonen ,Brook,Ikonen,Romanov Struble and Olofsson in the past 3 years who are a huge part of our new found prospect depth.

Petry's got 2 years left before he's a Free Agent so getting a 22 year old prospect like Fischer and a 2nd is a great return and gives us a Goal Scorer with speed who's contract we control long term.

Domi was the butt of most jokes when mentioned on the Sportsnet and Tim /Sid show's .
he was known for scoring as many empty net goals as even strength coming off a 2 year decline after his rookie season .

Nick Ritchie is a guy who shows up in the post season who adds a brute force physical edge similar to Brendan Lemieux but with more upside long term. he's not going to be an All Star no but that doesnt mean he wont be a clutch player for us in Cup Runs .

having big guys like Poehling , Kotkanemi , Armia on offense is great but they're more skill the grit
Ritchie is a momentium changer to help Zadorov pummel opposition in the post season .

i agree its a high price for Ritchie but what he brings is something MTL cant draft in our Cup window frame
he's someone who will continue to be valuable on LW behind Drouin and Domi for years .
Byron will be a 4th line player after this year as he age's but he is still a solid option there
Ritchie on 3rd with Danault , Poehling or Kotkanemi is a win no matter who it is .

Price Weber Drouin and Byron are 27 million as i said above ,
Chariot,Kulak,Alzner and Reilly is closer to 11m then 10 so you're right i was off .

even if we dont plan on keeping them in your opinion
Alzner ,Drouin and Byron would still be on the books at that time as stated

Agreed
or atleast an additional 2nd or 3rd if not an upgrade to 1st

if Petry makes the playoffs with ARZ MTL gets a 1st ?
make the 2nd conditional ?

That makes sense to me bc also if I’m Arizona I’m not giving up a lottery low or not pick in a draft this deep
