Joel Edmundson is younger + if we retain Vat's salary it's no different then what they're paying Edmundson now. No shot this happens

Edmundson is younger and arguably better than Vatanen. I'd have to think that the pick would be going the other way.

It just seems like Edmundson has fallen out of favor and this gives the Blues a chance to get rid of him without taking on a large contract.

Not a chance. Eddy is betting on himself this year, and there's a pretty solid chance he reverts back to prior form. He is a shut down LHD with size and nasty to his game who can chip in every so often with puck movement. Not his strength but he's not terrible offensively like some other stay-at-home Dmen. Come December, when a playoff hopeful has an injury need on their defensive corps, he will fetch what he is truly worth. Right now he's at a nadir. The dude will be a good add for someone, but he shouldn't be given away. This trade is a give-away for a guy who is meh.
