Description

Here is my take on this whole Risto trade request or whatever you want to call his "smile is gone" thing. I think the Ducks might be the perfect fit for him. We need RHD, they need cap space. You would think he is at his lowest right now when it comes to compensation. No one wants a guy who was -41 last year. But you can say he provides plenty of offensive qualities that will help on the back end on the PP.

It might take more (in the eyes of some) but the stars have never been more aligned.

This will give the ducks a RHD they are looking for. Young, already signed and a change of scenery. And makes room on the wing for a young guy

The Ducks would have to add more picks or someone of a higher caliber. Sprong, Shore, and a 2nd would probably work as a healthy bridge between people who believe Risto’s value is not all that high and the people who want the Sabres to cash out on Risto.

The Ristolainen debate in a nutshell

Stats guys: Risto is terrible, we should literally move him for any asset whatsoever

While Risto is vastly overrated he holds more market value than Devin F'n Shore.

Im not a Sabres fan at all, Im a Habs fan. Even if the Habs don't need Ristolainen right now I'd offer more than this just to get him at such a cheap cost.

Exactly. All Botterill has to do is email 29 GMs and say beat Devin Shore for Risto and almost every GM will have an offer ready.

Seriously, there's always the option of simply keeping Ristolainen. Buffalo doesn't HAVE to trade him. Just wait, a team with a need for a RHD dman will start really considering it will gladly pay more than Shore a 3rd for him.

But you want to know the thing that is the most telling? Every single AGM that trades him for peanuts, proceeds to place him on their top pair or top 4....

"He sucks, he can't play defense" etc etc etc "Oh he's on my team? 22 mins a night with top PP mins" rolling eyes

A team like Anaheim (i.e. one that needs better 5v5 defense) needs Ristolainen like a shipwrecked sailor needs seawater to quench his thirst; it might seem like a good idea in desperate circumstances, but it does nothing to fix the problem at hand and actively makes it worse.

As someone else has pointed out, why say Risto is garbage and pay peanuts for him, then put him on your top pair?

Every AGM I see has him on the top-4. Including those who think he's awful yet for some reason trade for him? Why would you trade for an awful player?

Every time I ask nobody has an answer.
