Description

After Valimaki's injury, every ACGM has been lining up to give us their overpriced bottom pairing defenders and not attaching any sort of decent asset alongside of it. The injury problem + cap crunch is solved by running a 22 man roster. I've assumed Dube beats out Czarnik and Quine for playing time rather than dominating the AHL for another year. This ACGM presents some pretty easy ways forward for the Flames to deal with the long term injury to Valimaki.

Do Nothing:
LTIR Valimaki
Play Kylington
Send down Quine
Call up Davidson
Cap Space = about 110k with 22 man roster

League Min Veteran:
LTIR Valimaki
Play Kylington
Send down Quine
Sign Schlemko for 1 x 700k
Cap Space = about 110k with 22 man roster

Trade Czarnik:
LTIR Valimaki
Play Kylington
Move Czarnik to a team that could use a RHS 3/4th line forward (Carolina & Detroit come to mind) for maybe a 5th rounder
Keep Quine up
Sign Hutton / Phaneuf for 1 x < $1.25M
Cap Space = about 75k with 22 man roster

Trade Frolik:
LTIR Valimaki
Move Frolik to a team that could use a versatile middle six winger and has a surplus LHD who is a dependable bottom pairing option (NYI come to mind). Perhaps Frolik + 2021 3rd for Hickey + Ho-Sang/Dal Cole
Keep Quine up
Play acquired LD and Kylington in the AHL/press box.
Cap Space = about 900k with a 23 man roster

I've shown what I think is the most complicated but least likely choice (trade Frolik), and I personally would consider the league min veteran option the best option as I want Kylington to play and develop further this year at the NHL level. Seeing as one of our LD prospects is missing a bunch of development time being injured, why make it two of them by benching Kylington.

I would rather just play Kylington than trade for 3 years of Hickey, I understand we may need to move Frolik out, but doing so creates a void in the top 6. My preference would be to trade/waive Czarnik and Jankowski. They can be replaced with cheap UFAs like Sheahan and DSP or Jaskin

No you need to call up the Rangers right away and offer a 4th round pick for Brendan Smith. It will work out fine for you, I promise.

I agree with that approach if they move Frolik (getting prospect + pick if at all possible, or using him plus a pick to upgrade him). My preference was just grabbing a UFA veteran signing if they were worried about LD depth and playing Kylington. It worked fine last year. This AGM was just to show that there are plenty of solutions to Valimaki's injury that don't involve taking on some team's cap dump (Russell, Johnson, etc.) that other ACGM's were doing continuously since the injury was announced.
