Depth is important but always quality over quantity. Any chance you can make sure centre matchups Matthews-Tavares-Malkin-Spezza (all elite talents), you do it. I personally believe that when Malkin is at his best, he is better than Tavares and Matthews at their best. And he could have a bounce back season at the age of 33, very possible.

Malkin has already won enough in his career, he has no reason to feel more pressure. Plus, he was able to be one of the most dominant players in the league under Dan Bylsma, an even bigger headache than Mike Babcock. Malkin provides much needed size and physicality on the Leafs team, plus unparalleled skill.

I don’t think it’s a bad trade, the Penguins have to retain nearly half his salary if they want to get good value back, which they have. Kerfoot is a talented centre with great all round abilities who can play on the second line. Brooks is a potential third line guy and Bracco is a poors man Marner.

Why would Pittsburgh even think about doing that? I can guarantee they get a way better return
