Bogosian

Created by: UpsideDownQue
Team: 2019-20 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 15, 2019
Published: Aug. 15, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Basically swapping LHD for RHD but adding a late round pick since Bogosian > Barberio

This gives the Avs an extra body on RHD and would also help early in the season if EJ isnt ready for the first couple games. BUF saves just over $1M in cap space and gets rid of one of their extra RHDs

Barberio > Bogo

How? Barberio is a 6th or 7th D man who is regularly a healthy scratch with horrendous possession numbers, and who averages 15 mins of ice time per game. Bogosian is a 2nd pairing guy when healthy who, ill admit, doesnt have great possession numbers (but still better than Barberio), who plays over 21 mins per game. Neither one is a regular on the PP and both play on the PK regularly. I dont see how Barberio is better at all

i think youre really underrating Bogosian. Hes overpaid and has injury issues but when healthy is still a solid number 4 guy

21+ mins of ice time per game when healthy with a significant role on the PK. He is a number 4 D man on most teams

I think it makes sense since we are short on the right side if Timmins isn't playing in the big leagues this year. We acquired 2 other LHD this offseason and graves should get a few more looks as well, Barbs i don't think is in any future plans so we don't lose much.

Can't defend the blueline. Check.
Can't successfully exit the defensive zone with possession. Check.
Can't enter the offensive zone with possession. Check.

I can understand that there would be apprehension, but he is hardly the WORSE NHL defenseman. He was one of the Jets top defensemen before being traded to Buffalo.
His 19 pts was actually 4th among all Avalanche defensemen and would be an upgrade over Barbario.
It would be a small price to pay to balance LHD with RHD. Bogosian has not been healthy, but when healthy he is a 2nd pairing defenseman.

edit: go to https://evolving-hockey.com/ and compare the two

2nd pair based on what? You literally said nothing to justify this.

tbh after some more googling he might not be a strong 2nd pairing d man, but he would be an above average number 5 d man who is capable of playing in a larger role if needed. COL would use him on the 3rd pair behind EJ and Makar anyway, and while he would likely only play 17-18 mins per game, it would be nice to have a D man who is proven to be capable of playing 21-22 mins per night in case of an injury. He is still a massive upgrade over Barberio too

Bogosian is a fringe NHLer at best.

First i said when healthy he is a second pairing.
Even though he only played 65 games last year his 19 pts actually ranked him 106, his TOI 1,405:44 min was ranked 95th and TOI/gm 21:38 was 60th among all NHL defensemen.
Since there are 124 second paring NHL defensemen that puts him in the second pairing category.
I will repeat a sending a 4th and moving Barberio for Bogosian at half price is an upgrade. Maybe there will a better option but this is not a bad deal for the AVS.

The trade makes too much sense, both are 29, both are extra assets, Buffalo saves cap, Colorado gets depth on the Right side.
I would never insinuate that Bogosian is a top pairing (even though the Jets gave him a salary of a first pairing) but he is certainly better than Barberio.
Thanks for posting this, interesting conversations.

bogo hasnt been healthy since 2010. Hes not a 2nd pairing Dman anymore. Barbs is a well liked locker room guy, Bogo has been a black cloud for 2 teams already. This is a train wreck of a move

you may be correct, only the GM's will decide what trades are fair (larsson for hall). Bogosian seems to be a good locker room presence, he played well last year and he should be much better once he recovers from his hip surgery. We disagree which is fine, which of us is correct, we will probably never know. You think it is bad for Colorado, I think getting a RHD who can score, play minutes and block shots and better than Barberio is a good thing.
Let's agree to disagree, thanks for your input.

Bogosian has been plagued with a bad rep for a very long time, lack of accountability etc with him . A guy as injured as he has been through his whole career, after as many surgeries as he has had, its more likely he doesnt recovery and find a new lease on his hockey life. Hes on borrowed time in this league, I dont see him getting a contract unless its for league min scraps after he is done. He hasnt been healhty in a decade

Bogosian cant score, he has 5 goals in the last 3 seasons....come on man, take off the sabres homer glasses for once

He's really not that bad. When he plays he is solid. Hes also been playing with one of the worst groups of Defenseman and defensive forwards in the league. His problem isn't that he sucks, it's that he is made of glass.

I wouldn't say he has homer glasses. He is visibly better than most of the DMen that have played for us recently. No sabres fan really wants bogosian but its more of a combination of Health/Contract/Other Players theyve acquired than it is that hes bad.
