Opinions on Hutton

Description
Numbers look good but was wondering why he wasn't qualified after a 20 point season in 70 games playing bottom six minutes. I see the -23 but this was not a good Vancouver team. Is there something else or was Benning just being an idiot? Wondering cause Calgary may need another d after Valimaki got injured

Hutton = solid 3rd pair DFD with puck moving ability and little to no offensive upside

VAN arguably upgraded to

Benn = solid 3rd pair DFD with puck moving ability and moderate offensive upside

His qualifying offer would have had to been over 2.8 million per year which the Canucks didn’t want to do. Therefore let him walk into free agency. He’s a deecent NHL’er but with Calgary in a cap crunch they will probably look to sign a vet near the league minimum rather then Hutton at probably 1.5-2 million range. Just my thoughts

I'm not really sure why Vancouver let him leave outside of that he would have been a slightly expensive #5/#4D. He's not too much worse than Lindell at denying entry and can actually move the puck up the ice (Lindell v. Hutton). One just signed a massive $5.8M AAV, and the other will sign a show me deal with some very happy team for about $1.5M. I think he'd be good on the Flames to cover for the Valimaki injury, but they likely can't afford to pay him much more than the league minimum which I think he is worth more than.

Hutty Is soft, known for poor conditioning and losing puck battles. Take a look across the board at the minuses on last years team. Edler +3, Tanev +3, Stecher +9, Biega 0, Rest of our dmen around -3 then we had Hutton and Guddy at -23 playing easier minutes for the most part all year. Hutton can skate and make a good first pass but certainly was not worth the qualifying offer. Kind of hope the Flames sign him so we can burn him all year.
