True Marner equals 11.642 Matthews. But Marner equals 8.45 Aho. Marner doesn't equal MVP and one year away from UFA 9.5m Kucherov. Hence the stalemate.
Teams that have their star player on team friendly deal (think Winnipeg), don't get any forgiveness when negotiating with other RFAs. The team friendly deal for that player is meaningless in other negotiations.
By the same measure, if a team has overpaid a player, the teams aren't bound to overpaid all their RFAs now till eternity .

Looking at Kane and Toews career paths, they're far from being equal talent, but guess what ? the team pays them as equals, same with the Sedin twins, what's wrong with paying your duo franchise players equal pay ? oh yea, Dubas had to sign J.T. All 3 should have signed for 11 million.

oh yea, T. Hall was worth 6 million as a #1 franchise savior, McDavid is 12.5 million, times change. The Cap is almost double now compared to than, hence double the players pay check. sigh

Yea Kane and Toews got 6.3m for five years....and then starting their 9th season they hit the jackpot with those 10.5m. I find the Matthews comparison as a reason for equal pay for Marner so meaningless, it's really not valid in cap league with 31 teams. Not that blame Marner for using that argument in negotiations, but if he so intent on getting the absolute top dollar, he has the right to sign with any team, in any league.

I'm not supporting or claiming Marner and Matthews are equals, just stating the Blackhawks and their player agents deemed it both fair and respectable to pay both superstar players equal. Even though Kane and Toews were never equal on the ice. I know the key word is RESPECT. The word has lost all meaning and worth in today's society.

I assume you are suggesting that it would be disrespectful to Marner if he doesn't get Matthews money. Don't know how you come to that conclusion when almost all NHL contract are based on NHL comparables not individual teams. Respect? maybe if Matthews had taken less money and Marner agrees to less, the Leaf could have given more money to Kapanen and Johnson and maybe Brown could have continued to play in his hometown. So were Matthews and Marner "respectful" to their own teammates who didn't have they negotiations leverage? Matthews and Marner could have settled for less money, if they had wanted to (not that blame them for getting as much as they can)
The Leafs are spending to th cap. It's not like the owners of the Leafs are making any more money by paying Marner 8m as opposed to 11m. We're just talking about how the 81.5m is going to distributed among 23 players.

JVR, Bozak and Komarov can all thank J.T. for their removal from the team, just like Gardiner, Marleau, Brown and Hainsey can thank the 3 amigos for removing them from the team.

Wasnt it 3 cups... and they got their deals after they won them, not before, they actually took team friendly deals in order to put together a competitive team... which nobody seems to do anymore

They signed for 6.3 million after their first cup, then 10.5 each after their 3rd. 6.3 was around 9% of cap each, so Marner asking for similar to Matthews is a completely fair argument. Signing Tavares doesn't exactly help them in this situation either.

Yeah they signed a 5yr 6.3 mill after being the keys players that won the cup in 2010... then they won another and another, then they said okay now well take the paycheck and sign for 10.5/y which according to capfriendly 15% of the cap... Matthew's and it looks like marner haven't been able to get past the 1st round, but matthews signs for 14.5% of the cap and marner is looking for the same.. with no cups, league is going to implode if these types of contracts keep getting handed out

Yes the league is going to implode, I agree. These contracts are not sustainable.
