I don't know... EDM doesn't have the cap to take all of Fro's salary. I agree Fro is greater than Pool right now... CGY is paying for potential and team control of a young top 5 pick who might figure it out in the right circumstances. Frolik immediately helps EDM's need for top six wingers but is over 30. That being said, Frolik was in the best shape of the entire team last year and has always tested top 2 or 3 in fitness testing for the Flames. He could play for a number of years if EDM re-signed him.

The condition of the pick should be if JP gets 35 points the pick becomes a second rounder(take out the clause for the pick becoming a 1st rounder because that sh*t aint happening). Frolik at half retained has good value and that is not being reflected in this trade.

I don’t actually mind that trade. I would say retain 1.5 though. I see where your coming from to help both teams with cap. For picks I’d send a 3rd to Calgary with Calgary returning a 5th condition which could move to a 4th.

If I were the Flames heading into their window of contention, I think they would be willing to pay a 1st for a 6'4" 21 yr old right shot, right winger heading into his prime who just scored 40 points for the team, non? I can't see that condition being met, but if it was you'd be happy to pay I think. Frolik has value... for a year then he's UFA.

If JP scores 40 points then the Flames shouldn't have to overpay because they developed him properly or put him in a position to succeed. Frolik half retained plus a 3rd(possible 2nd rounder) is already fair value.

Not a bad idea for either team actually, but the values are off on the trade. Frolik at a cap hit of $2.15M is likely worth at least a third (if not a second to a contending team). The Oilers will be lucky to get back a second for JP. Counter proposal is the straight up Frolik @ 50% retained = JP. The only problem with this move is it likely makes the Flames a worse team this year (they have to go for it with two of their top 4 D becoming UFA's) and there is no veteran Finnish player on the roster who can mentor JP and teach him English.
