Considering Aho got 8.45m X 5 for , your proposal is more than fair for Marner....except for Leaf haters.

As a Sabres fan I love watching this all play out. I can't wait for when it gets real ugly, like October 2nd when he's still not signed. Get the popcorn ready....

its not going to get ugly They all know where the number is going to be. They are only allowed to be 10% over in the summer and can't put Horton and Clarkson on LTIR until the season starts. Its all to work under the cap situation.

You silly guys still read every Marner post that comes out to the media keeps posting them

Cant wait until Dahlin requests a trade because Buffalo has also killed his desire for the game

Its not about the $ its about the term... he would love to get 5 years, and only burn one ufa year off his contract

OK. I'm sure the Leafs would offer 8.45 X5. Would Marner accept that?

Risto is great offensively and big and strong he just makes a lot of mistake, mistake he can learn not to make. It’s the sabres fault.

yes because he had no leverage whatsoever in the discussion. He would probably have taken less if the term were 4 years too.

IMO he signed 8,5 only for the 5 years. But eh, it's only my opinion! Still think he's worth more than this and would probable have 9-9.5 if no OS was signed

????? What????? Players don't have to sign offer sheets. Your conclusion that Aho could have got more if Montreal hadn't presented an OS doesn't seem to ring true. It was because Aho SIGNED that OS the might have limited his $$$$ on his contract. Now I'll agree Aho might have got more if he had been one of the current group of about 9 RFAs and still hadn't signed. Aho fits in behind Point in playing value and probably tied with Marner and Rantanen.
The rumour was about Aho and Carolina was that Carolina was only offering a one year deal and eight year deal, both unsatisfactory to Aho. He's probably not all that happy with his 5 year deal now, but probably welcomes the certainty of 42m and UFA freedom in five years. A good enough compromise on Aho's part.

Fair or not, Marner isn't looking at Aho as a comparable. For one thing, taxes are lower in Carolina. If I'm Marner, I keep focused on Matthews because they're on the same team so same coach and system and Marner scored more points. Can't blame the man for trying.

Can't blame him for trying is right. But if teams were so interested in paying him Matthew money, he would have signed a contract for another team. Leafs can't stop him. Taxes? Personal tax rates are pretty meaningless in the tax structure of athletes/entertainers at least in Canada.

Dahlin will be signed by 9/1/20 long term unless there is a work stoppage. Buffalo will never let him get to his final RFA year. He will be twice the player Marner thinks he is.

Clearly they didn't try hard enough or it would be done. You think the Sabres wanted to give Skinner $9M after one year or Eichel $10M after two years? No, they didn't but that's the numbers it took to get it done. You lock up guys you want as soon as possible. The Leafs got Matthews done first on purpose, then they low balled Marner last summer. He went out and threw up a monster year and now he wants every penny. I love how all the Leaf fans want Marner to sign for so much less than Matthews (in term & money). I am enjoying how fans have turned on a player who has done nothing wrong and deserves every penny he can get.

because Matthews is a superior player and also a goal scoring center (Both positions that pay more) Marner does dersrve every dollar he gets, he is a very good player, but that doesn't mean he should demand something above market value. He isn't better then players like Kuch, Kane, Panarin but is demanding a contract just like them
