Description

this is from a non-leaf fan perspective:

i'm not saying it was the wrong decision. but what would this team look like if that never happened.

marner get the money he wants, and toronto get 2 extra years of control past Mathews and Nylander

Undo the original trades i believe were made mainly for cap reasons. i say the ottawa trade still happens.

sign Shattenkirk a little higher than tampa did.

more balance on all four lines. defence is better than i think it is currently, and on short term deals to make way for sandin, and liljegren next year. also a lot tougher of a team, with a lot of skill.

i tried to be as specific as possible, but this is more of a general idea of what could of been.

I think the present team is better than what's listed above. Fans might be frustrated with Marner but regardless of how the contract negotiation ends up he's a huge asset to them. He either re-signs and likely puts up close to 100 points this season, is offer sheeted and the Leafs take 4 1st round picks as compensation and now have cap space to sign someone else or they trade him to address other issues (reads: blueline).

Having Tavares makes the Leafs better. He's not the reason Marner isn't signed at this point

I think I would've rather had a more balanced team. They could've kept Kadri, kept the 1st in the Marleau deal and used that 1st plus maybe a prospect to get their perfect top 4D. Then they could've signed a solid 3C for around 4 mill and still have some cap space

The biggest thing about un-doing the Tavares signing is that all of the sudden, you don't have John Tavares. That's a pretty significant loss.

Then, you take out Jokiharu, who they weren't getting for Trevor Moore, and all of the sudden you're running out a worse d-core than last year. Kevin Shattenkirk as a top pairing dman? I think you'd be better off throwing a couple of pylons out there to slow the opposition down (Or just sign Dion and have him lay out flat...that'll take away space from the oppositions offence!)

Marner probably didn't get 11m, because he probably not reach 90+ pts without Tavares. I think it's samething, Tavares didn't get this incredible year without playmaker Marner. He probably reach 70-80 pts

What's your logic that Shatternkirk signs with the Leafs instead of Tampa. Rather have Tavares than the Gusev/Connelly combo.

Don't know your logic when you say the Leafs are in cap hell.

balanced team? we have a better team now than we do with what you put together. this team probably wouldnt make the playoffs.

I would rather have Tavares. Tavares makes Marner better and Marner makes Tavares better (chemistry). If the leafs did not have Tavares then I think Marner would have had 15-20 points less last season and worth a couple million less AAV. I believe Marner will sign by camp and it will be in the range of 9.5-10mil for 6 years. It is in Marners best interest to keep playing with Tavares as they make each other better and his next contract will be bigger. Also being in Toronto the endorsement money he will get will be enormous.
