Let Holtby Walk

Created by: AndrewLadd
Team: 2020-21 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 16, 2019
Published: Aug. 16, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
While I’m not a caps fan I’m high on Samsonov. I think 2020-21 he should split games w Copley and become full them starter in 2021-22. Backstroke takes a bit of a team discount to make the team’s cap situation better.

I'd love for that to be the Backstrom contract (and you might not be that far off, probs a bit low), but why Dylan DeMelo for that term and money? Siegenthaler played the right side very well last year (and was paired with Orpik for most minutes too) and the Caps have prospects who'll play on the left side in 2020-21, so no real need for UFA defense.

Imo djoo gets more than a 4th. And I 100% want leason in the nhl next year. I would gladly trade boyd and bump Hagelin to the 4th line to make room for him.

Alexeyev is in the nhl next year I guarantee it

Agreed. Unless Jensen and Gudas have horrific years, the Capitals won't need anyone on defense for a looooong time. Caps are stacked there.

He was phenomenal in juniors and played very well at WJC-20

It's highly doubtful that Holtby is allowed to walk. Especially to start a guy with a .898 sv% in the AHL last year.
It's a sign they are throwing in the towel on OV last few years. I don't think that is going to happen.
They will be making moves next year some how some way to keep him. My guess is the person who is dumped is Oshie.

Yeah. He wasn’t in the ahl last year but at rookie camp he was quoted as being nhl ready. I see no reason to waste him in the ahl like we did so many other players ( barber is a great example)

I assume 8.5 after the massive discount we got on the first deal

Oshie contract isn’t going to be able to be moved. It’s eller or orlov more than likely. But awful take on samsonov.

Hart had a .902 and 3.05 gga in the ahl
Samsonov .898 and a 2.7 gga in the ahl

You could argue that samsonov had better stats than hart. Both going into last season were top goalie prospects in the nhl. No reason to think a goalies first year in North America not knowing any English is a real preview of his best hockey. When he left the khl he was the best goalie (khl is much better than ahl) so maybe take a log off that fire. He’s a top goalie prospect for a reason.

A. no one knew what they would get out of Hart, and B. if philly had Holtby in net do you really think you see hart last year? Yeah me either.
Which is why I don't see them walking away with the person who has gotten them here in order to risk someone else who frankly hasn't show dominant performance in the AHL. Hell he hasn't even played one game at the NHL level. Didn't they pull him in the AHL playoffs for Vitek? Does that inspire confidence?

If we sign Holtby to some ridiculous deal that will pay him 9M when he’s 37 I will riot. His last two regular seasons have been average and he was not good in the playoffs last year.

Pavelski just got 7M AAV for three years for a loose comp. I think a fair deal for Nick would be 6x7.5M. That contract wouldnt be great in the final year or two but it keeps the cap hit lower during the last few years of our window.

You also have to consider that backstrom as a ufa would get 10million easily. Look what Tavares got. Doesn’t have to be a lengthy contract but he’s an elite center. 8.5m is fair and not a disrespectful offer

Tavares is a better player than Backstrom and was five years younger when he signed his deal. I don’t think Backstrom would get anywhere close to 10M AAV on the open market.

tavares is better? look at their stats the last 3 seasons and get back to me on who's better. and that hardly matter again bc backstrom will be a ufa and can sign anywhere for 3 years for the same money he can sign in dc for in 5 years...

backstrom literally get no respect at all its terrible.

I mean, if we offered Backstrom for Tavares straight up, Toronto would laugh in our face.

If Toronto offer is Tavares for backstrom we would laugh at them. In the last 3 years Tavares has 7 more points. That’s slightly more than 2 more points a season. Also Tavares makes 11 million for a long time

Long story short backstrom could easily get way more than that offer. His first deal was a steal. But to each his own
