Acquiring Hall, I think will not make the club better. The Oilers had the 2nd and 4th scorers in the league last season and still failed to qualify for postseason. The problem is defence and goaltending. Address these liabilities and Edmonton will be a playing the post season.
The $11M assigned to Hall would be better spent addressing their needs. If Jersey can’t sign Hall, then next season he will be coveted, and can play wherever he chooses. Edmonton, I think would be far on the list. I think I had read somewhere (rumour) that he lost some heart playing for the Oilers. He needed a change of scenery.
Oiler fans need to let that trade go. Edmonton has been horrible on defence since McDavid entered the league. I think it was imperative the club acquired a young defenseman, who could log hard minutes defending against their opponents best players. To compare the positions is like comparing apples and oranges. In my opinion, it takes a defensemen longer to reach that elite level than forwards. Will Larson be an elite defenseman? I don’t know, but without him today, competitively I think they are worst.
Edmonton needs to pursue another Larson. A defenseman who can log minutes against the opponents better players. When the Oilers made their miracle run pursuing the cup in 2006, they had Roloson in net, Pronger, who seemed to be everywhere defending, making Roloson better and their captain, overlooked and under appreciated Jason Smith, who may be thought as a poor man’s version of Chris Pronger, at least defensively.
In my humble opinion, it is not more offence the Oilers need. It is defence.
