The CGY trade makes perfect sense to me. But for Boston, they only shed 1M$ to re-sign both McAvoy and Carlo and I don’t know if it’s enough for them to say yes. Maybe retain more on Alzner (about 1M$) and get maybe a 3rd.

That's a smart move for Calgary, looks like it works for both teams, nice work

While I don’t think Backes should be on the roster at all, I like the deal because it frees up some cap for 2021-22. I also like the Calgary trade, although I would rather a slightly higher pick. Good work.

No from Boston. Easily. Gaining 1m in cap space while taking on 2 players worse than Backes one with a longer and worse contract. And give up a pick to do it? Lol, no thanks. Retain half of Alzner keep and Thompson they might consider it

I just think that Frolik is too serviceable of a player to warrant them sacrificing a higher pick. And if the Habs don't make the playoffs, you can probably flip him for a 2nd rounder at the TDL, so that's a good return for Reilly overall. Frolik replaces-ish Shaw until a rookie makes it into the top 6.

My thinking is that Reilly is worth more than a 4th, and IMO Calgary needs to clear cap so badly that other teams probably wouldn’t give up any value for Frolik. If they were willing to give up value, I think he’d probably be gone by now. That said, I don’t think that this is a bad deal for the habs by any means.

I did entertain the possibility of a higher pick. But I don't think Calgary fans would like it all that much. But that'd probably be an amazing return if the Habs could pull this off:

Calgary:
Reilly (Retained $400,000 by the Habs, meaning that if he doesn't work for the team, they can bury him in full in the AHL. for this year and next.)
WPG's 2020 4th rd pick

Montreal:
Frolik
CLG's 2020 2nd rd pick

That would effectively clear up almost $3.7M off of Calgary's salary cap.

Then at the TDL, Montreal goes and trade Frolik for another 2020 2nd rd pick by retaining half of his salary for the remainder of the season. (Meaning, Reilly, cap space, & WPG's 4th rd pick become 2 2nd round picks)

I like it. And if that’s not enough, maybe the habs can throw in someone like Hudon as a project for the Flames.
