If Patrick Marleau's one-year $6.25MM cap hit took a first to erase, why would Backes' two-year hit for $6MM each cost so much less? Minnesota would go from a $4MM cap hit for 3 years to $6.5MM in two? That's making their cap hit worse -- in exchange for a fifth?

Kase brings back Carlo, or Clifton and a first.

Kase is good, but not worth CARLO and A FIRST. 2 seconds equals a 20 overall first

It saves $2.5MM in real money over three years, or $833,333 each year. Big deal. And Backes' contract is worse, from Boston's perspective. Rask's contract is dead weight; Backes' contract is obstructing McAvoy's and Carlo's re-signings.

I didn't say Carlo and a first. I said Carlo, or Clifton and a first.

Why is the actual cost $5MM? CapFriendly says he's owed $4MM each year.

Moore is not a bad contract and if were trading him for cap space they’d just trade him for a pick.

Moore is 2.something x4 right? JJ is 3.25x4, with retention that's 2.25, so about the same as Moore, and PIT doesn't have any space, but gets a slightly better player, but I don't think the difference between the two is a second to a fifth taking the contracts out bc with retention there's only a change of a few hundred k either way to reach team I think, I could be completely wrong though

Oh, because the signing bonus has already been paid? That might actually make a difference . . .

Signing bonuses are paid July 1st. If someone were to acquire Backes they pay him only $1 million in real money (still a $6 mil hit though) this year

Yup

Backes cost less to buyout than Marleau did

Has less actual cost left on contract than Marleau did

Has less cap hit pre and post buyout than Marleau did

Yet everyone thinks it will cost significantly more to move him. Lol.

Stop trading 300 picks

We don't talk Jack Johnson, it's more difficult to deal him than Moore

Most importantly, Moore & Miller are injured/can't be traded.

ANA doesn't trade Kase

Moore isn't a bad contract but term is really bad. 5 years for a 6th/7th D is too much

Wonder if something like Heinen for Kase would work. Similar age, similar hit, but kase is a smaller (5'11) playmaker while Heinen is a bigger (6'1) 2-way wing.

He'd be a fringe 4 on some teams. Very underrated d-man.

Hardly, nothing wrong with having having a quality d man locked long term for little money

What did I just read....

He can play in bottom-4 and both sides and looks okay, but he isn't good. Just look at his numbers

quality dman? guess you're easy GM to convince lol

Not an all-star. Not waiver trash either. He can slot in 2nd or 3rd pairing on either side. Contribute at both ends. I’ll take that for under 3m and call it a good deal.
