Isles - Laine trade

Created by: Hockeygoalie53
Team: 2019-20 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 20, 2019
Published: Aug. 20, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I've seen a few people posting on here that 3 eastern conference teams have inquired about Laines' availability and that the ask from WPG is an NHL Defenseman and a top prospect... seems a little light to me, but if that's the case the Isles should be able to put together a package to get him... this is my take on a WPG/NYI trade.

Also, Hickey gets traded for a picks to open up spots for both Dobson and Aho. Boychuk becomes a roving 7th D... He is kept as insurance in case Dobson isn't ready (I think he is), if he is ready Boychuk rotates through the bottom pairing of Aho and Dobson, while also filling in for the Top 4 when need be.

EDIT: Found someone who posted a link to the rumors... here it is

  1. Laine, Patrik [RFA Rights]
WPG
  1. Bellows, Kieffer
  2. Leddy, Nick
  3. 2020 2nd round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Chose Leddy as the NHL D since WPG seems to be weaker on the Left side. Leddy can slot on their 1st or 2nd pairing. Bellows is the prospect going and a 3rd was added as a sweetener since Bellows had a down year in the NHL.

A condition can be added that if the Isles make it to the ECF or SCF the 2nd can be bumped up to a 1st in 2021

  1. 2020 3rd round pick (CGY)

Used CGY cause they are looking for a LHD, but can be any team

You're not really close on value here. Something more like Leddy, Beau, Wilde, Bellows, and a 2nd. Even that's more quantity over quality though.

I agree that the deal seems lite, I'm just going off of what the rumored ask is (I edited the post to include a link to the rumors - not sure how legit they are). Pulock is a non-starter for the Isles, but I'd be willing to up the offer to one of the following:

Leddy, Wahlstrom and a 2nd OR Leddy, Wilde, Bellows and a 3rd for Laine. If WPG is insistent on Pulock, you walk away.

Starts with pulock or Dobson in my opinion. Say what you want about laine but he after Ovi goes, he’s going to be the next guy to win rocket Richard trophies.

What's elite goal scoring worth in the NHL? Laine is that, he needs to keep working on his game (he's only 21) but his value should be off the charts IMO. I know you are going by the "rumour" for a package, but I dont think a Leddy package gets it done. Probably somethign starting with Pulock, Bellows, Dal Colle and picks. But honestly I dont even know

Zero interest in Bellows, his first season in the AHL wasn't impressive at all.

That may be true, but until it happens I'm not moving Pulock or Dobson for a guy whose only value is he scores goals. The Isles have one of the deepest D cores in both the NHL and prospect wise, as well as, a deep forward prospect pool... they should be able to bundle a few of those together to get a deal done. WPG may initially ASK for Pulock or Dobson, doesn't mean they are getting him for a guy who doesn't want to play there... At that point, I OS him and lose the picks instead.

If these rumors are true and the ask is an NHL D and a Top prospect that package is WAY too much.

Bellows should have been in the NHL last year after the training camp he had. Only reason he wasn't was because the Isles had too many guys on NHL contracts. His struggles, like most all other Isles players, was due largely in part because of the new system the Isles implemented throughout the organization. He came on strong down the stretch once he got accustomed to the system. He's an NHL ready prospect and has a chance to make the team this year.

Pulock, Aho (AHL all star) , 2020 1st. It would take something like this (probably more) but I don’t think the isles do it cuz they don’t want to lose Pulock or Dobson.

If these rumours are true then every team in the NHL should be lining up to make a trade. If that's the case a bidding war would ensue and the package would only grow

Bellows is a good prospect who will be playing in the NHL at some point. He is learning their system and I expect he will be back in the AHL to continue building on his success this season.

Yes, but let me ask you this... which teams, who would be willing to move a Top defenseman, would be able to beat a package headlined by Leddy with either Wahlstrom or Bellows plus added in? Not many teams will be lining up to move a Top 4 defenseman. I can see Buffalo offering up Risto, but let's be honest, Leddy is a far better defenseman than Risto and I don't believe Buffalo has the CAP space to sign Laine long term, even if Risto goes the other way.

You're right, but I think the jets could take back a salary as well to make the cap work. All Im saying is, if Laine is available then all teams should be seeing what it would cost them. If you get in a 5-10 team bidding war the price will go up
