Wennberg

Created by: Billy739
Team: 2019-20 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 20, 2019
Published: Aug. 20, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Since signing his new contract 2 seasons ago Wennberg's struggled to live up to expectations.Wennberg since his 59 point seasons has fallen to 35 points then 25 points in the seasons to follow while also dropping from 18+ minutes on ice to 15 .

i still think Wennberg has Potential as a #3 Center consistently but my intention and motivation for bringing him is to play Poehlings Wing and help him take faceoffs . the hope is by the time Caufield shows up Wennberg-Poehling will be a possession pairing with experience that can get Caufield pucks to score with.

Just to be clear i dont think Wennbergs so bad he's a 4th line player , what i do think is he's now in MTL where Claude plays all 4 lines . The most important reason however is on 4th line with Poehling he'll get a lot more individual attention in his efforts to help Poehling jump to Center as a result i believe he'll be elevated with Poehling and eventually play with Caufield. (getting Caufield the puck means more goals and Wennberg/Poehling could provide that longterm)

As Tatar Petry, Armia , Lehkonen and others get pushed out by the youth we'll see a greater importance put on Wennberg/Poehling and Domi/Kotkanemi .

by 2022 the hope is :

Domi-Kotkanemi-Gallagher
Wennberg-Poehling-Caufield
Drouin-Danault-Suzuki
Vedejmo-Olofsson-Evans
Pitlick

Mete-Weber
Romanov-Juulsen
Chariot-Brook

  1. Wennberg, Alexander
Additional Details:
-CBJ save 2m in cap swapping Byron's contract for Wennberg

- CBJ adds a consistent 20 goal scorer with speed , grit and who his heavily relied upon as a Penalty kill specialist with the ability to score short handed scoring chances more often then not .

-CBJ get Teasdale who is out this season for surgery but just came off leading his team to a Memorial cup finishing 2nd in Playoff scoring in the CHL playoff run . Our AHL coach who coached him in junior for 3 years calls him the Gallagher of his former team because of his heart and ability to battle for goals infront of the net. he's a long term guy who will need a season in the AHL before becoming a regular on the bottom 6 until he hits his prime years where the sky's the limit for these types of players known as a net front presence . (its how Gallagher was developed more or less . if it wasnt for him being out a season we wouldnt even think about moving him but 48/50 contracts and counting

-CBJ gets 2 conditional picks that lean in their favor

Wennberg is trending downwards in CBJ just like Domi and Strome was in ARZ and Galchenyuk was here . Its simply time for both teams to part ways rather then watch it continue .
CBJ
  1. Byron, Paul ($500,000 retained)
  2. Teasdale, Joël
  3. 2020 2nd round pick (MTL)
  4. 2021 2nd round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
-conditional 2020 2nd :CBJ gets the higher pick of the 2 MTL holds

-conditional 2021 pick becomes a 1st if MTL makes ECF in either 2019-2020 or 2020-21 with Wennberg playing 50% or more of the games .

So you're basically trading away 4 assets for a 3rd/4th liner? Montreal passes...

Columbus doesn't need to save cap, Montreal does though. Hard pass

Wennberg's value is at an all time low. No way he gets that package. Byron is a good F and as of right now the better option of the 2 IMO.

1- we're paying slightly more then we did for Shaw who played a similar role but had less skill potential then Wennberg , Shaw relied more on being a pest and having grit and it gives us the chance to move Byron out now for a profit after picking him up for nothing and building him into a solid player .

2- we arent signing half our UFA's we are moving them before 2022 in this situation and for what Wennberg would be doing 4.9m is a bargain IF he can live up to expectations that is .

I just dont see MTL trading for a guy who makes north of 4 for 4 more years to play in their bottom 6. Maybe he comes out of the gate and plays well and then a deal can be made? I dont know...I like Byron though and he's been good for the habs

pretty sure the huge explination at the top covers the clearly repeated fact that he's not spending 4 years playing in the bottom 6 .

i want him to be the Eller to his Galchenyuk , the Shaw to his Domi , the Damphousse to his Koivu
someone with more experience helping the youth take on Center at the NHL

just wanted to know if Value was fair not which player you like more :P
i like Byron more then Wennberg but Wennberg's at a good price and provides a skill set we need from a team without leverage.
business is business and Byrons inability to win faceoffs leaves him a non option in the direction this scenario is leading

i'd rather a half dozen other players that would cost a lot more but Wennberg fits the role needed the best in all honesty .

Wennberg, Alexander is a waste for 4.9m cap space, he is not even worth 1m right now and is a 4th liner at best.

sounds like Domi and how ARZ felt about him , Tatar and how VGK felt about him,Kulak and how how CGY felt and Petry and how EDM felt about him .
we do quite well with people other teams write off including Byron on Waivers

what matters is can he play Claude Juliens style of hockey
the answer to that question fortunately for him is Yes he does

given that there are bottom 6 players making anywhere from 700k- 6m he wouldnt be the most over paid bottom 6 player
and unlike most he'd be on a line that otherwise would be 2nd or 3rd line on most teams if you consider the minutes Claude gives 4th liner's vs the rest of the NHL
(thompson 10-17 minutes over the season and averaged 14minute last year )

Tatar was playing well in Detroit before he was traded, it did not work out, AZ gave up too quickly on Domi, Wennberg, Alexander has gotten worst every years since his big year, for 4.9m last year he scored TWO GOALS in 75 games...hell most 4th liners score more than that.....any GM trading for Wennberg, Alexander even at 50% retain should be institutionalize in a mental institution....
