Description
There are still a couple big names on the market who can sneak in and make a team better right before the season starts.

We know all things are pointing to Thornton and Marleau both returning to San Jose any time soon. And Justin Williams has an open spot in Carolina if he chooses not to retire, same with Kronwall for Detroit but less likely. Besides that, these players are up for grabs.

Some importable notables:

Jake Gardiner is probably the sexiest name on this list. He can easily be a #3 defenceman on any team or #4 at the very least. It will be interesting to see what kind of deal he gets and where.
My prediction: Montreal

Derick Brassard: Definitely hurt his value after this poor season but can still be a very good 3rd line centre who can play the powerplay and move up in the lineup if needed. You're looking at a 1-2 year deal at 2-2.5 million for him.
My prediction: Edmonton

Patrick Maroon: He got shafted with a one year deal at a cheap rate even after having a few great seasons which led to the firing of his agent. I think the newly cup champion has earned a bit of a raise with some term aswell.
My prediction: St. Louis

Ben Hutton: Really interesting he didn't get a QO from Vancouver. Played a lot of minutes in their top 4 and still has decent upside. He will get a bridge "show me" deal.
My prediction: Calgary (because of injuries)

Thomas Vanek: a purer powerplay specialist that will play 4th line 5 on 5 but still put up points. Easy rental at the deadline.
My prediction: Detroit

Let me know what you guys think and who's careers are done in the NHL

maroon is about to be 31 coming off a 28 points season. where he had the 2nd lowest shot % of his career. probably wont get that much too be quite honest with you, i think he is over valuing his abilities in the modern day hockey world.

Vanek is not coming back to DET. There is literally no room on the roster for him. Kronwall is likely retiring as well.

Brassard makes a lot of sense for the Oil. As I see the roster right now (Brodziak and Manning to the AHL), the Oil have about 3.6 mil in space. If there is a deal there between 2-2.5 mil for Brassard he really needs to be snatched up.

My guess is Maroon has a couple teams offering 1-2 yr deals but he wants to wait and see what happens with STL and Barbashev before he commits. He'd love to stay in STL with his son, but in terms of on-ice value, Barbashev is worth more and likely eats up the last bit of cap space that we have left.

I think Maroon ends up in CGY, especially if they end up trading Frolik to open up a roster spot.

Personally, I hope the Big Rig moves on so he can leave as a legend instead of becoming an overpaid/aging buyout candidate. His footspeed is only going to get worse, and he was only relevant when his linemates did all of the heavy lifting to get the puck down to his office. Not a bad player, but not the direction any team should be heading tbh.

I don't see why Ottawa doesn't pick up one of these guys and give them top minutes and let them mentor younger guys and not have to call so many up to the NHL. Flip them at the deadline for essentially free draft picks

Ottawa already did this in acquiring Ennis and Hainsey from free agency. As a result, they have an excess of players which leaves spots for only 2 rookie forwards (and batherson but he's a top 6 lock already) and only 1-2 rookie defenceman.

I understand but icing 3 rookie forwards and two D to start the season will be terrible. All 5 of them besides Batherson would benefit more from playing against AHL competition and bonding with future teammates down there. By the end of the trade deadline, we could easily have 3 more forwards, a D or 2 plus an extra goalie called up. Having 8-10 rookies in the lineup can't happen and I am all for the tanking

Tkachuk - White - Brown
Duclair - Anisimov - Batherson
*Rookie* - Tierney - Ryan
Ennis - Pageau - *Rookie*
Boedker

Chabot - DeMelo
Wolanin - Zaitsev
*Rookie* - Hainsey
Borowiecki

Yes it's true that the young guys need to spend time in the AHL but a lot of them already have and it would hurt their growth to slow them down. Logan Brown and Rudolfs Balcers look ready to be full time NHLers. Max Veronneau is fresh off 4 years at College and is 23 years old so the AHL won't really help him. Max Lajoie and Chirstian Jaros have already played the majority of the season in the NHL and Erik Brannstrom is an A level prospect who is ready to shine at the NHL level. That's a ton of names who can fight for the 3 spots you can see up there which most teams probably have anyway. And then you have a ton of names like Chlapik, Paul, Formenton, Norris, Davidsson, Abramov who will eat up the minutes and grow in the AHL. Even with those 3 rookies with the big club, there is an excess of players in Belleville and that would stunt the growth of the players down there because there's only so many players who can play in your top 6. Signing anyone else would be unwise, I thought Hainsey and Ennis was even a bit much but I can live with that. We can't just ice a team with 100% veterans, that's not much of a rebuild
