Do you not think Tierny alone could get them a first? Its not like Letang is going to get a better first considering he'll be traded to a playoff team. Adding in DeMelo and a third seems wasteful. Basically what I am trying to say is that sure Letang should fetch more than Tierny at TDL but because only playoff teams will be trading for them they will both pull the same type of first round pick

Letang is a top 10 defensemen, not a 3rd line C, their values aren't even close

Idk about Tierney pulling in a first, he should but you never know. Dzingel was supposed to pull a 1st but got 2 2nds and a dump (Duclair which he isn't, Torts just didn't like him). It depends on the desperation of teams. If a team is a lock for the playoffs at the deadline I can see a team like Boston, Winnipeg etc all trading their 1sts for him.
