projecting 2021-22 leads to some conclusions

Description
Welcome to 2021. The season is about to begin. The window for cup contending should be opened at that time (that's what they promised, isn'T it?). Some conclusions can be drawn from this roster though.
Conclusion 1 : We can only add 1 Star player. By adding 2 stars at 9 $ each (named 'missing winger' and 'missing LHD') , you can see i'm over the cap hit by 3$M and would have problems signing Suzuki and Brook at the end of the year, and Romanov and Caufield in the coming years
So maybe this is why signing someone like Gardiner at 5$ M X 5 could make sense, even if we would prefer higher end D

Conclusion 2 : we need to add a star to contend, but maybe more in the 9$M range than 11 $, again for cap hit reason. So offer sheeting Aho at 11 $ would probably have been a mistake

Conclusion 3 : I don't see how we can keep Gally if he wants more than 5 $M/year. I think he will aim for 7 or 8M$. Can we keep Danault or Tatar ? I've kept Danault for leadership and he'S fast skater, so will be able to keep up with the pace longer.
I've kept Petry cause he seems to be getting better each year and we don't have someone as good in our defense prospects. Also you need veterans to contend

So in conslusion, gardiner at 5$ M and Laine at 9$ is the type of moves we could realistically make. But are they good enough ? Hall at 11$M would not work capwise it seems. Does that make sense ?

Poehlings a RW or Center , he's never played LW at any level because he's usually one of the best 2 way centers on any team he's been on .

Domi-Kotkanemi-Gallagher(2 goal scorers with tons of heart capable of 55-60 goals beside Kotkanemi between the 2 of them )

Drouin-Poehling-Caufield (Poehling-Caufield got Chemistry on multiple team USA runs and put on a Clinic at Rookie Camp)

Lehkonen-Danault-Suzuki(Danault stays until either Evans , Ikonen , Olofsson or even KHL Prospect Khiamuntidinov who had 5 points in 9 games as a KHL rookie )

Byron-Evans -Armia (Byron and Armia provide the support an Evans needs to play Center )

Vedejmo (Teasdale will step up and we'll trade Byron or Lehkonen to make room depending on how long Surgery delays his progress . )

Mete-Weber (Mete will be close to becoming a complete all around D under Weber ready to replace him in 2023 when Webers contract becomes movable )

Romanov-Brook(by 2021-22 these two will have 1-2 seasons under them by now)

Kulak -Fleury (as good as Juulsen with potential to be a PP threat unlike Juulsen so we move him and Petry out so Brook and Fleury can play )

Harris (Primeau's RD in NCAA and for Team USA ,helping Primeau place top 10 among NCAA goalies year 1 and year 2 he helped him take NCAA #1 Goalie honors and as Primeau rises so will Harris stock)

Technically Caufield could be a full fledged Center by then
he's never had the chance to play Center when on teams with his peers like team USA
but on his high school team and most likely his NCAA team he will play Center

With a big hole in talent dropping off from 1st line Wisconsin Center Alex Turcotte to 3rd line Center Tarek Baker that's just to much to expect Messner to fill.
with plenty of depth on RW including Cole's brother Brock it only makes sense for Coach Tony Granato to slot Cole in at 2nd Center giving them a solid 4 lines of Centers .

Habs are going to loose Petry to free agency if they don't trade him at the deadline. No way he would accept 3x5 on his last big contract. Also Habs are deep at RHD so it would be smart to spend elsewhere.

Danault and Domi's contracts could also be underevaluated if they continue to improve next season.

Since MTL is not popular on UFAs market, I think you should take the saved up money on Petry to overpay a little bit Gallager. His actual contract is a steal and he earned a bit of recognition for his sacrifice. Term will be the hard part to agree on because he is injury prone.

Do thoses modifications and then we will work on the next Step: Trade for a ******' elite LHD. wink

Good work though. +1

thanks for the suggestions. I guess we could keep Gallagher if he's not asking for too much and too long

I'll work on something. He would be 29. So a 4-5 year contract could work. As much as i like him, I Can't imagine him a top 6 forward past 33 .

I think Petry could be happy with 5 millions /3 years since he will be 33 , but I'll look into Edler 's contract and a few other older def UFA as a comparative

I didn't think he was going to be that old! I guess he would accept that deal then, but MTL won't offer it.

Edler would be a good comparison, but MTL won't be in the same situation as VAN. They had to overpay to keep Edler (and Benn) because they had no other LHD with NHL experience for next season.

Without any trade or UFAs,in 2 years MTL will have Juulsen, Brooks and possibly Fleury with some NHL experience on top of Weber to fill in the right side.

No need to everpay for a 33 y.o. veteran at that position. The left side is a different story...
