Avs NHL AHL depth look

Description
Avs depth chart is getting absolutely tight.
23 man roster is what I imagine they go into the season with, once Cole comes off IR they will have to make a decision though as they’ll be over the max player number, and as most players will have to clear waivers I hope it’s Nuke that gets sent down.

Realistic starting AHL lineup is:

Kaut - Tynan - O’Connor
Greer - Bowers - Condra
Joly - Shyvyrov - Megna
Lewis - Dries - Henry
All other forwards will be either scratched or in the east coast, I think a fair depth chart of remaining forwards would be
Saigeon
Dickinson
Barron
Nantel

Defense
Macdonald - Meloche
Alt - Timmins
Graves - Renouf
Scratches / EC depth chart:
Lindholm
Anderson

Non NHL goalies depth chart
Werner
Miska
MacDonald

I imagine Miska and Werner will platoon, and if Grub or Franc goes down for an extended period of time Miska will be signed to an NHL deal so that he can go backup while Werner keeps getting AHL starts.

The Nischuskin signing really tightens things up with literally no wiggle room once Cole gets healthy. You have to hope someone out of
FWDS: Nischuskin, Kamenev, Burakovsky
D: Rosen, Connauton, Graves, Barberio
Really solidifies a spot in the lineup. So that when Cole comes back you’re looking at for example a Barberio and determining him expendable, so he can be sent down or traded without too much hesitation. If a guy like Kamenev gets sent down and is claimed on waivers that will be a real kick in the balls and horrible asset management.
IMO if a centre is hurt the pecking order for a spot should be Kamenev, followed by Bowers.
If a Winger is hurt the order should be Kamenev, Nuke, Kaut, Greer.
Long story short the avs are in tight with roster spots and must be careful with who they call up / send down as a lot of guys are waiver eligible now. Unless someone like say Calvert is hurt going into camp I think the Nischuskin signing is incredibly stupid, pointless, and blocking prospects. If because of thise signing they end up losing a Kamenev, Greer, etc to waivers it will be inexcusable.

Agreed the Nuke signing was garbage, he better be the waiver fodder if he doesn't solidify himself. Like why give him a chance over our homegrown prospects? maybe a trade is coming considering we have way to much bottom 6 talent.

Completely agree, gotta wonder how disappointing this is for someone like Kaut, just another reclamation project the acs don’t owe anything to. Better not lose someone because of it

Barberio should be gone already, he's another who is blocking prospects. I don't see Nichushkin as an altogether bad signing. Cheap, relatively young, former 1st round pick, big body, can add some points and could break out, could be the prospect of an all Russian line with him, Kamenev and Burakovsky. I agree the Avs will need to be careful, but let's be honest, the likes of Greer aren't irreplaceable, and the Avs certainly aren't likely to be a team to rush prospects. Timmins for example is likely imho to spend at least some time in the AHL to reach game fitness and see if he's totally over the concussion issues. Could even end up being the whole season. Rosen isn't irreplaceable either, so I don't see there being as much of a worry as you're making out here.

Landeskog-MacKinnon-Rantanen
Jost-Kadri-Donskoi
Burakovsky-Compher-Wilson
Nieto-Bellemare-Calvert
Kamenev-Nichushkin

Grubauer
Francouz

-To start the season
Girard/Zadorov LD on first two pairs
Makar RD on one of two first pairs
Connauton the other RD in the top4?
Byram probably gets 9-games try
Rosen & Graves could be in the lineup although Graves could be sent down to start the season (if not ready/is waivers exempt)
Barberio as 7th D
Alt, Lindholm, MacDonald, Meloche, Timmins could challenge
Cole/Johnson on IR

-If all D are healthy
Girard-Johnson
Zadorov-Makar
Connauton/Rosen/Graves-Cole
Barberio

AHL

Dries-Tynan-O'Connor
Condra-Bowers-Joly/Kaut
Greer--Megna-Henry
Lewis-Shvyryov-Wagner
Two of Barron, Dickinson, Lauzon, McGauley, Saigeon, Nantel stay as depth; others in the ECHL (first 2 on NHL contracts)

MacDonald-Alt
Renouf-Timmins
Lindholm-Meloche
Anderson (NHL)/Davis as extra
Larocque, Tischke, Williams in the ECHL

Miska
Werner
McDonald in the ECHL

Overall, good forward group, lots of depth on D and capable goaltending in the NHL.
In the A, top9 F is loaded; all 6 regulars D can play on top pairing I believe.

Idk that much about COL prospects/players, especially the new ones but tried my best with a realistic lineup. Also, if Werner is ready, it's good otherwise they could add another G for the AHL.

Signing Nichushkin is a contingency depth signing in case Rantanen can't be signed by training camp and/or the start of the season. This can comfortably push guys like Compher/Burakovsky/Donskoi/Jost up the line while maintaining a roster with NHL experienced players. Just like Joe said, it will create competition at training camp. Also, it's only for 1 year, allowing guys like Kaut, Bowers etc to develop with full minutes in the AHL. They aren't ready to make the NHL lineup yet. They'll do better with full time minutes in the AHL than 4th line minutes in the NHL. Nichushkin's point totals aren't great, but he's big and if anything can provide 4th line grit and help on penalty kiling.
