Hollands 2019-20 Projection

Created by: Miguelicious
Team: 2019-20 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 22, 2019
Published: Aug. 22, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
SHEAHAN UFA SIGNING
With Brassard seemingly in the fold and then news broke that he signed elsewhere, Holland has to jump quickly to fill that 3C slot with someone inexpensive. $1.5M for 1 year seems fair to me.

STONE PTO
Michael Stone played his best hockey under Dave Tippet. Topping out at 36pts in '15-'16.
Secondary stats suggest some time on the PP and PK.
There's a serviceable defenseman in there somewhere so why not sign him to a PTO and see what he can do?

1st Line:
DRAI 43G 52A 95P - MCDAVID 42G 71A 113P - KASSIAN 18G 15A 33P
This line works, as seen in the latter part of last season. All Kassian needs is to not be a liability and let the 2 superstars do the work. Chip in here and there, everyone's happy.

2nd Line:
NEAL 19G 22A 42P - NUGE 26G 45A 71P - CHIASSON 18G 12A 30P
Nuge needs better linemates than what he had to work with almost his entire career. Neal brings in proven scoring although we're banking on the fact that last year was an anomaly and not the norm. Chiasson was a fantastic find last year: given the opportunity he can contribute on the score sheet.

3rd Line:
NYGARD 6G 9A 15P - SHEAHAN 13G 12A 25P - GRANLUND 13G 13A 26P
The default 3rd line. Nygard too unproven for top6 minutes. Sheahan signed since Granlund prefers not to play C. Granlund is at home on the bot6, has been his entire career.

4th Line:
KHAIRA 10G 12A 22P - HAAS/CAVE 6G 20A 26P (2 player total) - ARCHIBALD/GAGNER 15G 15A 30P (2 player total)
The default 4th Line. JJ has always been a fantastic 4th line option, Haas is too much of an unknown to play any higher in the lineup, and Archibald gets to rotate with Gagner as needed. Cave and Haas also rotate as needed.

1st Pair:
KLEFBOM 11G 28A 39P - LARSSON 2G 18A 20P
A 2nd line at best on other teams, they are the default 1st line in Edmonton. Klefbom must figure out a way to stay healthy or the Oilers playoff hopes will be further than they are now. Larsson is a good defenseman, not great either.

2nd Pair:
NURSE 13G 31A 44P - BENNING 4G 15A 19P
A budding 1st pairing D, Nurse needs to round out his defensive game in order for him to truly be one of the reliable 25+ minute a night defensemen on any team. Bouchard's eventual partner when he arrives, Nurse needs to polish his game without the puck as his role will be to clean up after the youngster's lapses. Benning is benning, don't like him don't hate him. We've stuck through with this guy, might as well see it through. Better suited to the 3rd line, he needs to steady himself and not let the play die on his watch. Must also improve on the defensive side of things.

3rd Pair:
RUSSEL 2G 15A 17P - STONE/JONES 4G 12A 16P (2 player total)
Career 3rd pairing guy Russel needs to be the guiding hand for the wayward Stone and the super green Jones. Stone needs to find his game under Tippet and Jones needs to prove he belongs in the show.

Goalies:
Mike Smith 22W 17L 5OTL
Koskinen 16W 16L 6OTL
Mike Smith with be the eventual starter. Thanks a lot Chiarelli for the sweet parting gift (Koski contract). Nothing much to be said here.

Being close to the cap, the Oilers must might have to hope for PTO signing or two become NHL good. You mentioned the Koskinen signing. Makes me wonder about all levels of the Oiler management (not just Chiarelli) Oiler management and Oiler approved the Koskinen signing then a week later fire Chiarelli. Oiler ownership would have better to a participant in CapFriendly then their previous management team for player personnel evaluation.

I honestly dont know what to believe with the whole Chiarelli fiasco. Some reports say he closed himself off in his last weeks and did not consult anyone.. Other reports say it was a group decision, the PR friendly move was to say it was a group decision and that's what the story came out as. Honestly, it was a mess. Looking at the goalie market this offseason, you could tell the Koskinen signing was just horrible.

That 4.5m could have been spent elsewhere seeing as though we signed our starter to $2M lol.
palhal liked this.

Haha it's easier to do once you've read all the scouting reports and watch the players on a regular basis.

Any feedback about that entire thing though? Am i out to lunch? Am i close? Sounds believable?
