On the open market, how much do u think he gets.. he has produced way more than JT and also won a cup, and with the cap going up i dont think its far off to say he will get 11 mil

though doubt he gets to the open market

He'll be 32 when he signs his next contract....So 11m seems high, especially if any term is connected to it. And as we seen in the "new" NHL, it's the RFAs who are getting a bigger piece of the pie. Less will coming to aging UFAs.

Age 32, regression will start to set in. Ide say he gets similar to what pavelski just got. Once you cross 30 though its a crapshoot on when your career will end. Cant really compare them but im going to... backes, lucic, eriksson all got 6m for 5+ years. how do those deals look now. pavelskis deal might look horrible pretty soon. cant imagine a high term with high dollar attached to a 32 year old with lots of miles

Unless he shows slowing down this season, I think the best comparable points and impact (although opposite as far as goals vs. playmaking goes) is Pavelski. However Backstrom will be 2 years younger, so I could foresee 1-2 years longer and 1-1.5 mil mil higher.

So I think 4 years at 8.5 mil or 5 years at 8 mil per are sensible figures.

I think he re-ups with the Caps though, perhaps at a small discount (7.5 mil per for 5 years for example).
